The history of the port
• The port has it’s present location since the end of Byzantine period. It was
used to export cereals from the fields of Thessaly and handmade products
from the mount Pelion.
• The first authority of the port was established after the liberation of Thessaly
from the Turks in 1881. The construction of the port is placed between 1889
and 1923.
• In 1939 it was the third largest port in Greece after Piraeus & Sallonica.
• Damages from bombings during the second world war
• The present development planning of the port since 1983 after a long period of
problems and negotiations
