"My wife and I have had the good fortune to have traveled abroad on
Rotary service projects to half a dozen countries .. so far. We have
worked very closely with people, mostly children, in some extremely poor areas in Africa and South America. We have seen infants with mould on their skin in Venezuela, children walking barefoot through raw sewage in Kenya and a whole family living with nothing but a tree over their heads in Ghana.
When we return home and talk about our experiences to friends and colleagues we share photographs that depict the abject poverty but we also often share many photos of children smiling, dancing, laughing and playing. Invariably, a friend or colleague will note the joy and happiness and make this observation ..."They are probably happy because they don't know any better". I beg to differ. They understand their condition very well. Perhaps we are the ones that don't know any better. We have so much yet many of us still can't find happiness."
