SIMULATION OF COMB-DRIVE USING COVENTORWARE

This project deals with the development of a methodology for modelling the Comb-
Drive. CoventorWare analysis was used to simulate electrostatic actuated comb drives
operating under required conditions. A model was developed using the Designer and
Analyzer of CoventorWare. Results showed the coupled interaction between the
electrostatic and mechanical domains of the Comb-Drive. The analysis was based on
the evolution of electrostatic force versus comb finger engagement. Experimental
deformations were obtained using the CoventorWare.

In this project the Comb-Drives with different number of comb teeth were designed
but gap between the teeth was unaltered. Through numerical simulations, we determined an
optimum design for a comb drive reliability test structure, which has a good defined part
exposed to fatigue.

From this project we concluded that the Comb-Drive are the very accurate and
sensitive devices that can be used for actuation applications and Comb-Drive with 5 teeth is
optimum with regard to applied voltage and output displacement.
Project Proposal
(for final year Mtech)

Objective: To construct and optimise an MEMS actuator using COVENTORWARE

and analyse its electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical properties .

Approach:

1. Study the different actuators available.

2. Select an actuator for optimisation.
3. Construct the actuator using software tools.
4. Analyse initially with Coventor.
5. Compare the result with other tools that are available.
