RH BILL-A Key to Economic Progress?

The Reproductive Health bill is indeed a controversial issue. It is inviting divisiveness

among us Filipinos, especially the Church and the State, especially so because no less than the
President himself has openly declared his full support of the bill.

Before taking sides on the issue-what actually is the Reproductive Health Bill? The
proponents of the bill strongly advocate that every couple has the right to choose the number of
children they shall have. They resort to family planning so that they can have only as many
children as they can support. They also say that the unchecked population explosion in our
country is a deterrent to economic progress. It is further argued that the government cannot
support a rapidly growing population. Family planning results in responsible parenthood.

I agree with this argument, but there is a catch in the word “responsible”. What causes
my concern is this-Will the artificial means of birth control, especially the contraceptive pills and
condom be used only by parents or couples who are legally married? Will they not be used by
any couple even among teenagers to perform sexual activities outside of marriage? There is a
possibility that the use of these contraceptives will be abused, especially if the government will
distribute them free of charge.

Proponents of the bill are concerned only about the economic and social aspects. Let us
not forget the moral and spiritual aspects too. We are living in a Christian country. I don’t think I
shall be comfortable in a society where everyone is free to perform sexual acts because they no
longer fear unwanted pregnancies or social ostracism. This will lead to moral decadence.

The fear of God should be foremost in our hearts. If we are really God-fearing and loving
people, we try our best to discipline ourselves, even our sexual urge without resorting to artificial
devices.

Responsible parents will bring up responsible children in a disciplined society!
