o many of my favourite musical
discoveries can be traced back (and
credited) to NPR’s brilliant pod-
cast, “All Songs Considered”. It was
there I first heard The Black Keys. The
show is occasionally known to play
throwback music, especially if some
and Muddy Waters.
My confidence was unmistakably
shaken to learn that, in fact, The Black
Keys are a contemporary band in the
fledgling years of their musical debut.
They are not even a band, really, just
two dudes from Akron, Ohio. They
discern that its superlative channel
would be via LP in a wood-panelled
thickly-carpeted room tossed with pil-
lows and half-full glasses of scotch,
somewhere deep in the forest. (Maybe
this is getting too specific.)
The Black Keys do have a sound
pop music, you have to remember
such is exactly the point. And if it has
that sultry, vintage texture of some-
thing that sounds like it should be on a
dusty record player discovered like a
lost pirate treasure in your parents’
basement, all the better.
