Week 5

This week we did home sweet home activity. We became the objects in the house. The
ultimate aim of this activity is to foster creativity, develop observation and cooperation. We
talked about communication conflicts. In fact there are a lot of reasons for communication
conflicts. If we think in terms of ELT, the main reason of communication conflicts is the
inconsistency between what we’re saying and what we’re doing. Therefore verbal and
nonverbal communication should go hand in hand in order to convey messages effectively
and not to cause misunderstandings. For example when we’re asking students “would you like
to play a game?”, we should be enthusiastic. We demonstrated some examples of
inconsistency which cause communication breakdowns in the classroom. They were really
useful for us to realize any behavior which can hinder students’ learning.

Home sweet home activity can be used in ELT classes in many ways. We can use it for
teaching furniture, objects in house, prepositions and there is /there are. It depends on our
creativity to develop this activity. The in/consistency activity can be applied to ELT easily
both effectively and ineffectively. So if we don’t want to be one our teachers that we hate we
should be aware of what our body language is saying.
