IIT – JEE Coaching institutes – History of the BRAND

In the recent years IIT-JEE coaching institutes has gained a lot of importance. 99% of
students appearing for this competitive exam are coached at such institutes. There are
more and more coaching institutes entering this arena coz of two important things high
fees and quality education. IIT – JEE coaching is a more earning proposition than any
other type of training. The fees charged by the top three institutes in India are in the
range of Rs.1,10,000 to Rs.1,70,000 for the two year course. But a decade back nobody
heard about rigorous training to prepare for these competitive exams.

Way back in the year 1990s a person called Vinod Kumar Bansal, grandson of a sweet
seller in Jhansi, came to Kota to work as a mechanical engineer for JK Synthetics Ltd., a
polyester plant that shut down in the late 1990s. Mr. Bansal started the coaching empire
after he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in 1974. In 1983, he met G.D. Agarwal,
who ran a Mumbai–based IIT coaching institute. Mr. Bansal says he realized his students
could also end up in the elite institutes. He began taking on students who wanted to ace
the IIT exam. The trained students from his institute started landing courses in the top
IIT institutes. Word of mouth spread fast and he got more students. This went on and he
started creating records with maximum students passing the exams and many of his
students getting in the top 100.

More than three lakh students take the test each year; around 5,500 are successful. Of
the 3,000 students who took Bansal’s classes last year, 955 gained admission in an IIT.
To enter Bansal’s classroom, Class 10 students must graduate with more than 75%
marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics. Also the aspiring students must also sit
for entrance exam devised by Bansal Classes.
Bansal’s coaching classes have spawned an imitative movement in Kota, a small town
with a population of 1.5 million people, about 250 km form Jaipur. The industry now
trains an estimated 50,000 youths each year in standardized medical and engineering
exams. The most obvious economic impact has been the growth of the coaching industry
itself, an estimated 130 coaching institutes now operates out of Kota. It is estimated
that 40% of the IIT aspirants come from Kota every year and this trend is increasing.

Some of IIT coaching institutes also started exploring new cities citing the Kota
connection. Most of IIT coaching institutes heavily advertise their Kota connection and
this helps to get maximum admissions. The numbers of seats in IIT colleges has
remained the same or have increased to some extent, but the numbers of students
applying for these competitive exams have increased superseding. The total worth of the
IIT coaching industry is more than Rs 10000 crore.

Kota IIT classes spread out India-wide !!!!

Three years ago, Kota-based coaching class Insight
made a quiet entry to Mumbai’s western suburbs. The academy didn’t spend a penny on brand-
building; all it mentioned in its pamphlets was that it came from Rajasthan’s coaching hub. That was
the time Resonance, another Kota-headquartered coaching academy, set up shop in Delhi. It adopted
a big-bang approach; bus panels and billboards screamed about its arrival. In the meantime, Kota’s
Big Daddy—Bansal Classes—also set up two branches in Jaipur and Ajmer.
Two decades ago, Kota, an obscure speck along the Chambal, was in the news for a spate of
suicides that took place after J K Synthetics closed down, leaving 4,000 of its employees jobless.
Today, however, this town is a brand that claims to know the formula that IIT aspirants must apply to
enter the premier tech schools. As Lokesh Khandelwal, director and co-founder of Resonance,
proudly proclaims, “Classes in Kota have developed a system which is superior to any other. About
40% students who make it to the IITs have benefited from the approach designed at Kota.” And it’s
not all big talk—close to 50,000 IIT contenders from across the country travel to Kota each year for
that passport to the IITs. So now, why is Kota coming to them?

Experts who know a thing or two about IIT-JEE say many of the Kota institutes that are reaching out
to students across the country are doing so to attract talent. In an industry driven by the final outcome,
or the grand JEE result, attracting bright students is essential for survival. “At the end of the game, the
IIT ranks that students get speak louder than a million ads,” Praveen Tyagi, proprietor of a Mumbai-
based class, IITian’s Pace, feels.

A few years ago, Bansal Classes, the biggest player in the Kota IIT coaching classes business, used
to admit a few thousand students. Now, it annually takes in tens of thousands, netting the best of the
IIT prospects, and that probably has prompted the other coaching classes to spread their search
farther and wider.

But Kota’s institutes that have stepped out say their reaching out has nothing to do with Bansal’s
expansion. After teaching for 22 years in Kota, R K Sharma, managing director of Aakrati, has started
a residential coaching class in Mumbai and calls it “Mini Kota

But all this does not mean that the attraction of going to Kota, the place known for its rigorous training,
has faded. The class strength of the centres in Kota is still more than that you’d find in any of the
outstation centres, says Insight proprietor Shishir Mittal. He has 2,000 students, 800 of whom are in
Kota. Sr: TO

State scores in AIEEE

Kota produced hundreds of selection in the
second most important engineering entrance examination.

Career Point of Kota produced toppers in four states Rohan Sharma from Himachal Pradesh,
Avradeep from Assam, Preetam Chaudhary from Tripura and Zuned Ahmed from Uttaranchal. The
institute also produced two top second rankers Gaurav Singh Chauhan in UP and Kamlesh Agrawal in
Chattisgarh.

Among the top 100 were Gaurav Singh Chauhan of Sonbhadra (AIR-41), Abhishek Gupta of Gurgaon
(AIR 78) and Saurabh Gupta of Jaipur (AIR 89). Out of total 18,000 aspirants, who took the
examination after taking guidance from Career Point, around 5,000 would able to secure their seats in
NIT, IIITs, and other deemed universities.

Brijesh Maheshwari of Allen Career Institute said that the institute has produced four top positions in
the examination. Shubham Gupta of Punjab secured second rank in the state and AIR-85, Shubham
Toshniwal of Uttar Pradesh secured AIR-165, Devendra Kumar Meena secured AIR-2580 and
Abhishek Singh of Dadar and Nagar Haveli secured 17,050 all-India rank.
Manoj Sharma of Eklavya coaching institute said that the aspirants were taken by surprise with the
declaration of AIEEE results, which were expected to be announced in first week of June. As of now,
we have got information about 450 students of the institute who qualified the examination, he said and
added that he was expecting around 70% result.

Nitin Motiani secured AIR-90 in the AIEEE conducted by CBSE last month and around 10 lakh
students appeared in this examination. Nitin also secured AIR-198 in the IIT-JEE examination and
stood fourth in the class XII Science examination conducted by Rajasthan Board of Secondary
Education.
Kota magic missing this year !!!!

The famous coaching hub in the country for IIT-JEE — Kota —

lost its sheen on Wednesday. As the entrance results were out during the day, not a single student
from the city’s premier coaching institutes managed to secure a position in the top 15 of the All India
Rankers (AIR). The institutes, which are now a brand name and attract thousands of students across
the country, have missed the bus for the first time in the last 14 years.
The top rank from Kota went to Sanchar Sharma (AIR 16) of Jodhpur, who attended coaching classes
at the newly launched Vibrant Academy. The next topper from the coaching hub, Mehul Kumar (AIR
19) of Jaipur, studied at Resonance Classes. Sanket Satish Totala of Aurangabad, who bagged AIR
20, also took coaching at Vibrant Academy. The silver lining though is that over 4,000 students from
Kota have cleared the exams.

The biggest setback was for Bansal Classes, which has been the pioneer in the IIT coaching industry
and has been producing maximum number of toppers every year since 1997. It failed to make a mark
in the top 20 with its topper Sameer Kumar Agarwal securing AIR 23.

Commenting on the performance, P K Bansal of Bansal Classes said it is shocking that not only Kota
but the whole northern region has no top ranker. “We are unable to understand why none of their
candidates got place in top 10,” he said. In 2007, three students (first, third and seventh rank) were in
the top 10 list. In 2008, it was six students (first, second, fifth, sixth, ninth and 10th rank). In 2009, it
was three students (second, seventh and 10th rank). Sources said error in question paper instructions
and deleting Kota from the list of examination centres could be reasons behind Kota’s “unexpected”
performance.
AIPMT: Five out of top 10 are from Kota Coaching
Institute !!!!

Kota has its own quota in All India Pre-Medical /Pre-Dental

Entrance Examination (AIPMT). Once again the coaching hub of the country — Kota — hogged the
limelight in AIPMT-2010 results as five out of top 10, including the topper, are from its premier
coaching institute – Allen.
The results of AIPMT (Final) 2010, conducted by CBSE, were declared on Sunday in which Lokesh
Agarwal of Kanpur secured the first rank. Not just this, 40 students, including 10 from distance-
learning course, secured the position in top 100.

Among top 10, third rank was secured by Isha Singh of Mujjaffar Nagar , fourth rank by Faizeen Zafar
of Allahabad, ninth rank by Hardik Pandey of Bhopal and 10th rank by Ankit Lalchandani of Bilaspur.

Director of Allen institute, Brajesh Maheshwari, said the total number of selections is 1,312. Out of
these, 958 are from classroom coaching and 354 are from distance learning courses . “The topper
Lokesh Agarwal achieved success in his first attempt.”

Maheshwari said around 1.5 lakh students appeared in the preliminary examination, out of which
14,217 were declared successful for main examination . Among the main aspirants, 3,267 were from
Allen and finally 1,312 got through, he said.

Pramod Maheshwari of Career Point said four candidates from the coaching institute have secured
positions in top 20. “We are still seeing the results to find more selection from the institute,” he added.

The 10th ranker Ankit Lalchandani said, “All the credit for my success goes to my parents and
teachers. They supported and motivated me throughout the course and helped me in realising my
dream.”
For Lokesh, his devotion and dedication towards the goal brought him success. His teachers, parents
and even friends like him for his commitment towards his task. Lokesh’s father, Devendra Agarwal,
who is a doctor said, “Whatever he assignment he pursues, he does it with full commitment. He has
made up his mind to become a surgeon and accordingly he started working towards it from Class VII
onwards.”
The result is amazing, unbelievable: Zafar
Taking first step towards her dream, Faizeen Zafar of Allahabad secured fourth position in AIPMT.
Daughter of a doctor couple, based in Saudi Arabia, Faizeen completed her Class 12 in CBSE stream
from Allahabad with an aggregate of 94.6%. She took coaching in Kota.
Zafar said the result is amazing and she was unable to believe when she came to know about her
ranking.

An Enduring Foundation...

Necessity is the mother of invention - it is true but sometimes necessity becomes mother of miracles - such a
miracle has taken shape of ALLEN CAREER INSTITUTE, a Pioneer & the most trusted institute in IIT-JEE / PRE-
MEDICAL / AIEEE. ALLEN is named in the memory of Late Shri Laxmi Narayan Maheshwari.

This was the only institute of its time, providing coaching of all the subjects under one roof i.e. Physics,
Chemistry, Biology & Maths were taught altogether. This made tuition a very convenient approach for students
in terms of time & conveyance.

In 1988 Shri Rajesh Maheshwari started tuition with just eight students & were well taught with honest devotion.
Within few years this small tuition center has become the choice of student community, with this growing
number of students the tuition center was converted into a full-fledged institute, providing coaching of all the
subjects in 1989. At this juncture of time, the eminent professor of Biology Dr. K. G. Vaishanava joined the
institute & this became a foundation stone of Pre-Medical preparation, as in 1991 institute achieved remarkable
Landmark of 12 selections in RPMT.

While ALLEN was on its way creating the history in Pre-Engineering & Pre-Medical Preparation year by year, Er.
Brajesh Maheshwari joined the team with great enthusiasm & excellent engineering background. His knowledge
of subject equipped the students with in-depth concepts of physics.

The consistent and ideal team efforts of faculty members, the vivid educational philosophy of all the HOD’s and
the visionary administration of Shri Rajesh Maheshwari altogether laid the path of glorious success, when

ADVERSE EFFECT OF COACHING DUE
TO INCREASING COMPETITION………

preparing for competitive exam, committed suicide: stress again?

Kota, January 17, A coaching girl hangs herself in room, making the suicide cases counts on
spree.

Sad demise, the common cause is not being personal matters but demonization and raising
stress level due to harsh increasing competitions around them. City-based students seem to
be finding it difficult to cope with pressure at the coaching, Peer pressure due to
accumulation of large creamy layer of students preparing in the city, unmet family
expectation and lack of motivational and career guidance.

According to police, A native for patna, Miss Shahin was preparing for PMT exam from a
leading pre-medical Institute in Kota. Last Saturday night, she was found hanging in the
room, left another suicide incident, Putting need of the mental/physiological guidance
necessary for students, to help in reducing such incidents.

Police explored the reasons. As It was expected due to past history of many stress based
incidents, police probed into the performance of the student. On enquiry, when the
performance list was recovered from coaching. The truth revealed was not a surprise.
Shahin’s performance was not good from some times, and due to this she was living under
stress. But Shahin was not weak student. She was intelligent in studies, as demonstrated in
past academics, scored 95%in class 10th and 75% in class 12th.

Individual past performance does not count today. The competition level has reached the
heights where an individual need temperament, managing stress, internal physiological
nourishment, customized preparation methodology and more important personal
motivation to give their productive output – said an Alumni, from IIT Bombay
According to many consultant psychiatrist s, a decision like suicide is taken out of insecurity.
“The decision is not taken in a instant but a man makes up his mind over a period of time as
his frustration level rises. He starts feeling that nobody is going to help him and the best way
out is to end his life. Such people always give out verbal and non-verbal signals indicating
their plight. If at that time they are given support and counseling even by a friend, such
incidences may be averted.”

“It is not rarely that we have to study non-stop for 16-18 hours not only when we have
mock exams at the institute but also in our day to day preparation time for competition
exams like IIT/PMT ,” said a student preparing from leading IITJee coaching Institute .

CHANGING LIFE STYLE OF STUDENTS

WHO LIVE IN HOSTELS FOR COACHING
IN KOTA…..
The system of living in hostel away from the parents is not a new one

Students get their education in schools or colleges either as day  scholars or by living in the hostels
attached to their schools or colleges. The system of living in hostel away from the parents is not a new
one. In India in ancient days students had to stay away from their parents in the ashrams of their
gurus till they completed their educa tion. They used to be under the complete charge of their
teachers during their educational careers. In many cases students had to go too far off places to get
higher education.
Life in the hostels today is of course much different from the life in the ancient ashrams or other seats
of higher learning. It is not as disciplined today as it used to be in the olden days. Students are sent to
the hostels to devote themselves to their studies with a single minded attention. They are expected to
put their heart and soul into studies. They are put under the charge of a superintendent who is
supposed to look after their interests and comforts. But it is generally seen that many students go
astray and take to several evil courses.
Hostel life has its own advantages as well as disadvantages. It trains the students to learn to live in
society. It teaches them the art of corporate living and inculcates in them a spirit of cooperation. Boys
who live together in a hostel get to know each other. They form friendships which may always help
them in their lives. They mix together and know the habits and nature of one another very well.
If the superintendent of the hostel is a good man its discipline is good. This discipline gives
good training to the boys. They learn to obey the rules. Thus, in future life they should become good
citizen. Life in a hostel enables the students to have a free exchange of ideas. This develops a feeling
of self confidence amongst the students and enables them to face the odds of life in a better way.
Boarders live together. So they learn many good things. They learn to give and take. They also learn
to help those who are in trouble. They attend to the sick. They sympathize with the poor. Moreover in
the hostel boys live far away from their parents. This teaches them to help themselves and to stand
on their own feet.
Hostel life has its disadvantages also. Boarders do not get the advantages of home life. They do not
get the training which the parents give to their children. They do not get love and personal care of
their parents. This makes them home sick at times. They feel the absence of their parents when they
are ill. A day scholar is always in touch with his home. But a boarder is cut off from it for months at a
stretch. Every year some rich and careless boys come to live in the hostel. They talk laugh and disturb
others. Thus it be comes impossible for many boys to stick to their books. They feel disturbed. They
cannot devote all their time to their studies.

Sometimes good boys get into bad company in a hostel. As a result they fall into bad habits.
They begin to smoke and drink. They get addicted to various drugs and intoxicants. They become
cinema fans and waste their time. They become fashionable. They waste the money of their parents.
On the whole the life of a boarder is better than that of a day scholar.
