MOTIVATING PEOPLE IN BORING JOBS

1 MSR CASC 12/8/21

What is Motivation?
Motivation is what causes people to behave as they do and
research has found that motivation is very complex.

Motivation is:

• an unconscious psychological process, rather than a logical

one
• individual
• variable over time
• often a social process involving others
• often affected strongly by experiences from many years ago.

WHAT IS BORING JOB?

A boring task is a task that demands little thinking or skill; a

task in which a worker has little or no control over what
work is done; a task that a worker has no room for decision-
making.

floors, labor on construction sites, stack supermarket

blue collar, manual or low skill workers. However, some
particular projects may be seen as boring.

Change yourself

There are many things in life that we cannot change. In

today’s economic conditions, there is no escape from fresh
challenges, uncertainties and turbulences. Trying to
control them is nothing but a futile exercise. On contrary,
what you can most easily control or modify is your
behaviour. Keep stress at bay, be open to changing your
attitude, outlook and work habits.

Identify stressors

Over dose of anything is bad. Doing a prefect is good but

if flair for perfection crosses limits, it could well become a
major cause for your stress. Try spending time on
necessary things, if failure to achieve high standards is
causing stress, redefine the standards. After all not every
task requires high degrees of precision. But don’t become
an workaholic.

Learn to relax

Most of the time we frown even when not warranted. Your

restlessness won’t change anything. In fact physical
restlessness automatically results in mental paranoia.
When you know you have no control over the bore
dome, the best thing is to relax. A relaxed state puts body-
mind back in peak shape.

Focus on you

When you are interacting with a diversified workforce, it is

important that you need to develop ways to work with
everyone. Sometimes your behaviour may become the
triggering factor for a conflict. This may lead to boring
work environment, so focus on your behaviour and
attitude.

13 MSR CASC 12/8/21

Respect your work

Your work is not always independent. You need to work

with a number of functional departments to finish the
project. Failure to finish the work within the deadline may
affect the careers of your teammates and you may be held
responsible for this. Commit to your work and finish it
within the stipulated time.

Learn to appreciate

You cannot complete a project without the support of team.

You may celebrate the success for completion of project
but you may not be the sole owner for all the achievements.
Acknowledge the positive things achieved by others and
reward them for the same.

A friendly touch

Maintain positive and friendly relations with everyone in

the organization to gain support of all of them. Behave
professionally and develop an optimistic attitude to
further your relations with the team. Avoid complaining
about others and learn to appreciate and recognize their
talents and abilities.

Fun Adds

You can also find ways to develop relationships in an

environment that does not involve work. Quite often
interaction in an informal way may help to foster better
relations at place. Play to organise various recreational
and fun filled activities like dramas, play-lets, joke
contests, games and puzzles to inculcate team spirit among
employees.

Conclusion

To enjoy and to be happy at work do not always stick to a

beaten path. Try developing a kind of flexibility that helps
you to overcome the difficulties foray in the future with
confidence. For this purpose you must think plan and
manage day-to-day activities in new ways.

“People who enjoy what they are doing
invariably do it well.”

“Positive relationships helps in better

work environment.”
