Three Types of Columns
• Doric
– Most basic; named
after the Dorians,
who invaded
Greece post
Trojan War.
• Ionic
– Style from Ionia
(Western Turkey).
• Corinthian
– You can guess.

• Columns were composed (on
most occassions) of drums,
stacked together and held
with iron dowel pins.

• The Parthenon uses
Doric columns.

Roman Temple Design
• Borrowed from the
Greeks, with changes.
– Temples are raised
much higher on a
podium, based off of
Etruscan design.
• Temples can only be
entered from the front.
– Columns may go all
around, but are free
standing only on the
portico (porch).
