Linh Hoang, a student from Vietnam, wrote a personal statement to request consideration for educational disadvantages she experienced as an English language learner. She struggled with vocabulary, comprehension, communication, and time management due to English being her second language. Living in a foreign country without family support also caused additional stress and difficulties adjusting to a new lifestyle and environment. While her school provided some ESL supports, she still felt her accommodations, lifestyle, and new environment had negatively impacted her academics.

To whom it may concern, My name is Linh Hoang and I am from Vietnam. I started my education in Australia in July 2008. Before going to mainstream, I completed High School Preparation in November 2008. Thus, it has been nearly two and a half years studying at All Saints as a mainstream student. However, I have experienced some difficulties with: - Expression in using vocabularies as English is my second language - Comprehending the tasks/assignments that given throughout the years - Communicating with other mainstream students, and this significantly effects my team-works assignments. - Since English is my second language and it requires more time on collecting information, looking up for vocabularies, reading skills as well as correcting grammar errors, time management is one of my most difficulties. Moreover, living in a foreign country has impacted on my lifestyle. There is a lack of family support along with additional stress. Since I started at All Saints in 2008, I found it really difficult to make a whole new set of friends at school. On the other hand, I personality believe that cultural differences has also made it difficult for me to cope. The staff at All Saints Anglican School has assisted me by providing ESL supports, as well as giving me some extra time for certain tasks and allowing me to use my dictionaries in some test. However, I still feel that accommodations, living lifestyle and a brand new environment had been part of my academic disadvantages. Hence, I would really appreciate your consideration in these matters. Yours faithfully,
