data from any of multiple input
ports to the specific output port
that will take the data toward its
intended destination.

Packet Switching

Circuit Switching
PACKET SWITCHING
• Data in form of packets.
• Queued.
• Connectionless.
• Packet include address or routing info.
• Out of order delivery.
• Bandwidth dynamically allocated on as-needed basis.
• Concurrent transmissions over physical channel.
• Delays and congestion.
• More cost-effective, offer better performance.
PACKET SWITCHING NETWORK
Packet Switching Basic Operation
• Data transmitted in small packets
– Typically 1000 octets (8 bit byte)
– Longer messages split into series of packets
– Each packet contains a portion of user data plus some
control info
• Control info
– Routing (addressing) info
• Packets are received, stored briefly (buffered) and
passed on to the next node
– Store and forward

CIRCUIT SWITCHING
• Connection oriented.
• Ordered delivery of packets.
• Bit delay constant.
• Well suited to analog transmission of voice signal. Eg. PSTN.
• Three phases:Establish,Transfer,Disconnect.
• Set up (connection) takes time.
• Once connected, transfer is transparent
• Inefficient
– Channel capacity dedicated for duration of connection
– If no data, capacity wasted
