Level 2 Proficiency: White Balance

Are your whites “white” enough in your shots? If not, perhaps the AWB or automatic white balance is
simply not doing the job. I want you to experiment with the different types of white balancing features on the
digital SLR.

Step 1: Review with teacher before you shoot

o How to change your white balance settings

o What settings work best where

Step 2: Shooting

• Set your camera to “P”

• Set ISO for 100 outside and 200 or 400 indoor
• Shoot 2 shots for EACH---one with AWB (auto white balance) and again on setting
1. Outside sunshine OR cloudy (depends on weather!) – SHALLOW DOF
2. Outside shaded area – LOW ANGLE
3. Inside fluorescent light – HIGH ANGLE
4. Inside with FLASH on flash setting – CLOSE UP PORTRAIT OF PARTNER
5. Outside with FLASH on flash setting – CLOSE UP OF NATURE

Step 3: Grading

1. Put photos in order and BATCH RENAME : lastname_prof

2. Open in BRIDGE for me to see metadata and conference to grade
