CHAPTER 3:

QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS

Subtopic 1.1:
Quadratic Functions
and their graphs
Learning Objective

Students will be taught to:

-Understand the concept of
quadratic functions and their
graphs.
Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

Recognise shapes of graphs
of quadratic functions.
Prior knowledge
-students can recognise quadratic functions (
) f ( x)  ax 2  bx  c

Teaching aids
-Autograph, worksheet and exercise
Introduction
The shapes of graphs of quadratic functions
can be identify by using Autograph. There
are two shapes of graphs which are:

Open upwards(  ) whena  0

Open downwards ( ) when a  0
Instruction:
1. Execute the Autograph program and maximize
the windows.
2. Click at Equation_Enter equation
3. A box will appear. Then, key in the equation
y  ax and
2
bx  click
c OK.
4. Lastly, the graph will be appear on the screen.
Use zoom in or zoom out if you can not see
clearly.
Example: f ( x)  x  2 x  5
2

Step 1: Execute the Autograph program and

maximize the windows.
Step 2: Click at Equation_Enter equation
Step 3: A box will appear. Then, key in the
equation y  x  2and
2
x  5click OK.
Step 4: The graph will be appear on the screen. But we can not
see the graph. So, use zoom out to make the range smaller.
