    Distilled spirits such as whiskey, vodka, and rum contributed 42.2% of total alcohol beverage tax revenues in 2007 despite accounting for only 31.1% of the total volume of alcohol consumed. In contrast, beer accounted for 45.5% of alcohol consumed but provided only 31.1% of tax revenues, while wine contributed 12.4% of the tax revenues though representing 13.6% of alcohol consumed. Distilled spirits thus paid a greater share of public revenues than its share of total alcohol.
