Council Member Lappin Secures More Than


$86,000 for Roosevelt Island in City Budget
Council Member Jessica Lappin was able to secure $86,300 for Roosevelt Island-based
organizations in the FY09 New York City budget passed by the Council on June 29th. Funds were
granted to seven different Roosevelt Island organizations to provide services ranging from computer
classes for seniors to a band program for students at PS/IS 217.

“I’m very proud to have been able to support so many wonderful organizations operating on
Roosevelt Island,” Council Member Lappin said. “Each group provides a service that will enrich
and better this community.”

Council Member Lappin was able to allocate money to the following groups:

• Roosevelt Island Day Nursery, $10,000


o Funding to support scholarships for low income students at the Day Nursery.
• Roosevelt Island Historical Society, $5,000
o Funding to support the staffing and general operations of the Roosevelt Island
Historical Society Trolley Kiosk visitor center.
• Roosevelt Island Disabled Association, $6,000
o Funding for field trips for the members of the disabled association.
• Roosevelt Island Senior Center, $30,250
o Funding to support the "seniors have more fun" program which includes yoga and
computer classes.
• Orphans International, $5,000
o Funding to support a program at the Child School on Roosevelt Island to teach the
children about the lives of orphaned children in Haiti and Indonesia.
• Parent Teacher Association of PS/IS 217, $20,000
o Funding to support programming at PS/IS 217 including ballroom dancing and a
band program.
• Roosevelt Island Youth Program, $10,050
o Funding to expand music program and extend the time the computer lab is open to
the youth.
