Density lab report

Intro: In this lab we measured the volume of three different objects and the mass in
order to calculate the density of the three objects. We are finding the density of the
objects so we can find out what kind of material they are made out of.

Experiment: we first started with three metal blocks of different sizes and masses. We
measured the length, width, and height of each block using a tape measure with a
millimeter scale. We multiplied them together to get the volume of each block. Next we
put each block on an electric scale and got the mass of each block. To get the density
we divided the mss by the volume (p=m/v). To account for the uncertainties of the tape
measure we rounded up and down by one and used the uncertainty equation to find a
rough estimate of the density.

Results: The volume of the first object which was the smallest was 98.8 cm3 with an
uncertainty plus or minus 6.5. the mass of object one was 833.1 grams plus or minus 1.
the density came out to be 8.768 kg/m3. The volume of the second largest object was
148.3 cm3 plus or minus 8.4 uncertainty. The mass was 1297 grams plus or minus 1
uncertainty. The density of the second object was 8.421 kg/m3. the volume of the
largest object was 197.8 cm3 plus or minus and uncertainty or 10.4. The mass of the
third object was 1695 grams with an uncertainty of plus or minus 1. The density of the
third object was 8.632 kg/m3.

Discussion: We can reasonably assume that the density of these three objects are the
same or very close being that the numbers we got for them are so similar. We can also
make the assumption that these three objects are made out of the same material. To
find out what material we have been measuring we went to my favorite website,
www.google.com. We found a website that lists the densities of common materials and
we matched the material we have with brass. Some of the skills that are highlighted in
this lab are the ability to make accurate measurements and account for the uncertainty.
