Title: Density

Aim:To find the density of a stone, rubber bun and metal rod.

Theory:The density occupied by various objects
Density of objects:Mass ÷ Volume
Materials:Stone,rubber bung,metal nut,measuring cylinder,string,spring
balance,beaker,pen,water
Procedure:
1. A suitable size stone, rubber bung and metal nut was selected
2. The balance was placed on a flat surface and ensured it was zeroed
3. The mass of the object was found and measured
4. A piece of string was tied to each object
5. The measuring cylinder was placed on a flat surface, water was then poured inside
6. The stone was gently lowered into the measuring cylinder until it was fully immersed
7. The difference between the two readings were obtained to give the volume of the stone
8. These steps were repeated 5-7 times with the rubber bun and metal nut
9. Their density was found

Results:

Place your results in a copy of the table shown below.

Objects Volume 1 (c³m) Volume 2 (cm³) Volume 3 (cm³) Mass of objects

Shape 40 48 6 8g

Rubber bung 40 42.5 2.5 2.2g

Metal 40 53 13 98.54g

Calculations

Calculate the density of the objects

Mass/Volume Stone = 11÷6 = 1.84 1.84gcm= 0184kgm-³

Rubber bung = 2.2÷2.5= 0.88gcm-³ 0.88gcm = 0.0088kgm-³

Metal nut = 98.5÷13=7.577 gcm-³ 7.577 gcm=0.07577kgm-³

Discussion:Density is a measure of how compact the mass in a substance or object is.The
density of an object or substance can be calculated from this equation: density in kilograms per
meter cubed is equal to mass in kilograms, divided by volume in meters cubed.Or in other
words, density is mass spread out over a volume.Or in other words, it's the number of kilograms
that 1 meter cubed of the substance weighs. If each meter cubed weighs more, the substance is
more dense.A string was used in order to attain the objects by the apparatus after the
measurements were carried out.The string’s volume had no effect on the volume of the objects. If
the mass of an object changes the density will do the same. The metal nut was the most dense of
all the objects. This occurred because it has high mass and a low volume which means that the
particles were packed very close together,in comparison to others that were measured.
Precaution: I made sure to do the electrical part in an area of no excessive wind.Ensured that I
got an object of the right size to fit in the measuring cylinder and also made sure that when I was
pouring the water in the cylinder it had the most suitable volume for accurate results.
Conclusion:The density of the stone, rubber bung and meta nut were found.
