Quarterly Review Project

Each quarter, you will be required to read one book outside of class. You will then
write a review of this book based on the format below. The books you choose
must be approved by me. I recommend you check my website for lists of great
young adult books. (Note: Anything below your reading level will not be
approved.)
R.E.V.I.E.W.
Directions: Each of the sections below should be at least one paragraph. Be very
detailed and use good word choice. Use your literary terms notes to help explain
yourself.

Relate: How do you relate to one of the characters in the book? Are you alike or
different, and in what ways? Have you ever been in a similar situation, etc.?

Explain: What is the plot of this book? Give a brief summary of the story. Using
literary terms you’ve learned to describe the book is highly recommended (hint,
hint!)

Visualize: In your mind, picture the setting as clearly as you can. Allow yourself
to fill in any details or colors that you need to. Then, write a very thorough
explanation of the setting so your reader can see what you see.

Investigate: Who is the author? Write up a short biography of the author,

specifically focusing on anything surrounding the book or the story in it. Why did
the author write this story, is there any connection to his or her personal life? Has
the author written other books and are they similar to this one?

Evaluate: What are the themes in this book? Every book will have at least one,
usually more than one. Is there a central theme or message?

Write: Write your review- Would you recommend this book to others?
Why/Why not? What was the best part of the plot? What was the worst part of
the plot? Choose 3 literary terms and discuss the author’s use of these literary
tools.
