INTRODUCTION TO SURAH YASIN

Surah Yasin was revealed in Makkah with eighty-three verses arranged into five s
ections. Surah Yasin begins with affirming of Muhammad’s r prophethood by invoking
the Qur’an, the book of wisdom and assuring him that he is on the right guidance.
Then it proceeds to describe the fate of the inhabitants of a certain settlemen
t; they repudiated the prophets sent to them and invited Allah’s I wrath on themse
lves which wiped them off the face of earth. This account of the attitude of the
people of the settlement makes a very significant point; the truth which the hi
gh, proud and sophisticated people of the city failed to see was recognised by a
simple, lowly man from the suburbs. The account of the ruined settlement is giv
en as a stern warning to the disbelievers of Makkah whose vanity made them rejec
t Muhammed r as a prophet of Allah I although they knew fully well the faultless
, unimpeachable character of the prophet and the clear, self explanatory truth o
f the message. After narrating the story of the settlement the surah once again
calls upon people to observe and ponder over the vast and varied phenomena of na
ture – from the stars and planets to the rich productivity of earth – and decide who
else but the supreme being who created and subjected the entire universe to an
ordered, integrated system is worthy of worship. Then the surah turns to the que
stion of resurrection and answers the disbelievers’ assertion that it is impossibl
e to revive the dead by putting together the bits and pieces of their dried, cru
mbly bones with a simple, satisfactory argument: he who created man from a mere
drop of water has also the power to recreate the dead on the day of resurrection
.
The surah discusses the crooked, avaricious mentality of the capitalist who deni
es responsibility of helping the poor and the needy on various pre-texts, and ev
en goes so far as to assert that why he should spend his wealth on those whom Al
lah I has not chosen to make prosperous. The surah also declares that the prophe
t is not a poet and that what he preaches is the Message of Allah I whose knowle
dge has no bounds, and not imaginary tales, exaggerated descriptions and false a
ssertions (which are the stock-in-trade of decadent poets).
THE VIRTUES OF SURAH YASIN
1. Anas t reported Allah’s Messenger r as saying, "Everything has a heart and the
heart of the Holy Qur’an is Yasin. Allah I will record anyone who recites Yasin as
having recited the Holy Qur’an ten times." Tirmidhi, Darimi 2. Ata ibn Abi Rabah
t told of hearing that Allah’s Messenger r said, "If anyone recites Yasin at the b
eginning of the day, his needs will be fulfilled." Darimi 3. Maqal ibn Yasaar Mu
zani t reported the Holy Prophet r as saying, "If anyone recites Yasin for Allah’s
I pleasure, his past sins will be forgiven; so recite it on those who are dying
." Baihaqi 4. Anas t reported Rasulullah r as saying, "Whoever goes to the grave
yard and reads Surah Yain Allah I gives them (the grave dwellers) ease that day,
and the reciter receives spiritual blessings equivalent to the amount of letter
s of Surah Yasin.” Qurtubi 5. Maqal ibn Yasaar t reports that the Holy Prophet r h
as said, "Recite Surah Yasin on those who are dying." Abu Dawud
6. Ummud Darda y reports the Noble Prophet r saying, "Over no person who is abou
t to die and Surah Yasin is read upon them but Allah I lightens the difficulties
of death for him." Qurtubi 7. Abu Hurairah t says that the Messenger of Allah r
has said, "Whoever recites Surah Yasin at night seeking the pleasure of Allah I
, that night he will be forgiven." Abu Nuaym 8. Aisha y reports Rasulullah r say
ing, "Indeed in the Noble Qur’an there is a surah which, for its reader will inter
cede and which will be a means of forgiveness for its listener. Listen carefully
, it is Surah Yasin, in the Torah it is called Muimmah." It was enquired, "O’ Mess
enger of Allah r, what is Muimmah?" Rasulullah r replied, "It contains for its r
eader the benefits of this world, it removes from him the dread of the next life
, and it is called Dafiah and Qadhiyah." Again it was enquired, "How is this Sur
ah Dafiah and Qadhiyah?" Rasulullah r replied, "It takes away from its reader al
l afflictions and fulfills his need. Whoever recites it, it will be made equal t
o twenty pilgrimages. Whoever shall listen to it, it will be as thousand dinars,
which he has given as charity in the path of Allah I. And whoever shall write i
t and then drink it, it will enter into his heart a thousand cures, a thousand r
adiant lights, a thousand times more increase in belief, a thousand mercies, a t
housand blessings, a thousand times more increase in guidance, and will remove f
rom him all diseases." Tha’labi, Tirmidhi in Nawadirul Usul According to another H
adith, Allah I recited Surah Yasin and Surah Taha one thousand years before He c
reated the Heavens and the Earth, and on hearing this the angels said “Blessing is
for that
Ummah unto whom the Qur’an will be sent, blessing is for the hearts which will bea
r it and blessing is for the tongues which will recite it”. There is another narra
tion which says: “Whoever reads Surah Yasin for the pleasure of Allah I only, all
his previous sins will be forgiven. Therefore make a practice of reading this Su
rah over those who have departed” 9. Abu Hurairah t reports the Messenger of Allah
r saying, "Whoever recites Surah Yasin on the eve of Friday, he will be forgive
n by morning.” Qurtubi 10. Abu Hurairah t reports the Holy Prophet r saying, "Whoe
ver recites Surah Yasin at night he will be forgiven in the morning, and whosoev
er recites Surah Ha-mim in which Dukhaan is mentioned he will be forgiven in the
morning.” Abu Ya’la 11. Jundub ibn Abdullah t narrates that the Holy Prophet r has
said, "Whoever reads Yasin at night seeking the pleasure of Allah I is forgiven.
" Ibn Hibbaan 12. Ibn Abbas t reports Rasoolullah r saying, "My heart’s desire is
that Surah Yasin should be present in the heart of every individual of my Ummah.”
Al Bazzaar 13. Yahya ibn Abi Kathir (R.A.) says, "This narration has reached me
that whoever shall recite Yasin at night, he remains content till morning and wh
oever shall recite it in the morning, he remains content till evening. And that
person who has related this to me has also experienced this." Thalabi (R.A.) sai
d, and Ibn Atiyah (R.A.) has mentioned this and Ibn Atiyah says, "Experience con
