The Castle District is Budapest's most beautiful treasure, but it reveals its many faces only to those who do not regret the time

Fragments
of Memory
The Temple of Solomon
in the Dresden Zwinger
Edited by Michael Korey

Recalling a largely forgotten aspect of Dresden’s art

history, this richly illustrated catalog examines the
Temple of Solomon—one of the most important and
elaborate architectural models ever built. The
temple’s exhibit in the Ramparts Pavilion of the
Zwinger—Dresden’s palace and major landmark of
German baroque architecture—is also explored, along
with the complete display of Jewish ritual
objects known as the “Juden Cabinet,” quite possibly
the world’s first Jewish museum that was made ac-
cessible to a broad public and considered one of
Dresden’s special attractions until it was disbanded
in the 19th century.

Light and Form
Modern Architecture and
Photography 1927–1950
Ibolya Csengel-Plank, Virág Hajdú, and Pál Ritoók

Luxury villas, elegant apartment houses with lifts

running in glass tubes, a power plant’s control
room that evokes an ancient spacecraft, trendy
shop interiors, and streamlined cinemas—all were
shot shortly after their completion for the architec-
tural magazine Tér és Forma (Space and Form). This
publication was the leading medium for promoting
the Modern Movement’s ideas in Hungary between
1928 and 1948, a period in which Hungarian archi-
tects created designs ranking among Modernism’s
best works worldwide. Today these photographs are
invaluable source material, not only documenting
buildings but also demonstrating that architectural
photographs can be artworks in their own right. Es-
says by photographic historian Ibolya Csengel-Plank
and architectural historians Virág Hajdú and Pál Ri-
toók explore how the Modern Movement influenced
Hungarian architects and how their buildings were 15
photographed. The bulk of the book is devoted to
more than 60 examples of architecture and interior
design, presented through superb photography, ac-
companied by short building descriptions and com-
ments on the images, and concluded with an
illustrated introduction to key architects, photogra-
phers, and cityscapes from 1930s Budapest.

Ibolya Csengel-Plank is a photographic historian.

Virág Hajdú and Pál Ritoók are both architectural
historians.

Embodied Visions: What
Does It Mean to Look
at a Work of Art?
Mit dem Körper sehen: Was bedeutet es,
ein Kunstwerk zu betrachten?
First Limited Edition
Siri Hustvedt

Art is not possible without the human capacity of reflective self-

consciousness, and looking at a work of art always partakes of mir-
roring—one’s sense of another person’s intention in the object.
With such a theme at its center, this work shows how the meanings
created in the perception of art are not purely cognitive but bodily
and creative. Additionally, this instructional work illustrates how
perception is an active process that relies heavily on unconscious,
learned motor-sensory abilities and a relation to space. Both mak-
ing and appreciating art would be impossible without imaginative
play, and this work explains how one inhabits the real world and
occupies another: the land of pretend.

18 Siri Hustvedt is the author of The Blindfold, The Enchantment of Lily

Dahl, Mysteries of the Rectangle: Essays on Painting, The Shaking
Woman or A History of My Nerves, and What I Loved: A Novel. She
lives in New York City.

New Alchemy
Contemporary Art After Beuys
Edited by Melanie Bono

Two decades after the death of Joseph Beuys, a new generation

of artists have begun to pick up the categories he introduced and
have started to develop them for the present day. Among the
multitude of references to the œuvre of the Düsseldorf master,
the most conspicuous are the “poor”—organic and ephemeral—
materials. Associations are also unearthed by the historical and
metaphysical aspects of the works as well as the thematization
of transformations and processes of formation. In actions and
performances, the objects are assigned a significance which also
incorporates the space where they are displayed. This reference
presents 11 selected artists who, although they have only been
known to the public for a few years, have already attracted a high
degree of attention. Numerous illustrations, accompanied by brief
commentaries, provide insights into their latest works.

Melanie Bono is the curator of the LWL-Landesmuseum für Kunst

Saudi Arabia
Somogy Art Publishers

Documenting the recent studies conducted on

a highly original, beautiful, and long-
neglected site by excavation teams, this
exploration reveals the hidden treasures of a
near-eastern civilization. More than 350 art
masterpieces, mostly unknown to a foreign
public and dating from prehistoric times to
modern days, introduce the life and culture
of a land of exchanges located at the cross-
road of major civilizations—including the
Mediterraneans, Mesopotamians, and Indi-
ans—which today constitutes Saudi Arabia.
The numerous testimonies include the
necropolis of Hegra, a smaller version of Petra
inscribed on the UNESCO World heritage list;
Mecqua, the fortress of Teima, which shows
22
strong Mesopotamian and Egyptian influence;
and the Dedan site, which is characterized by
monumental sculpture of Ptolemaic inspiration. Precious dishes and jewelry, monu-

The Power of Things
and the Flow of Cultural
Transformations
Edited by Lieselotte E. Saurma-Jeltsch and Anja Eisenbeiß

Comprising the Heidelberg University lecture series “Asia

and Europe in a Global Context,” this study aims to describe
the role of artifacts, luxurious objects, and ideas in cultural
processes from a wide range of disciplines—including art
history, anthropology, literature, and cultural studies. Con-
tending that material artifacts such as monuments, paint-
ings, and manuscripts are signs of cultural self-definition
even if they are integrated from far away, the examination
explains how these objects have become embedded in the
social and economic context as “natural,” indigenous things
as well as how culture is in a permanent process of becom-
ing “colonized” by their familiarity. The selected essays
demonstrate that this process is based on achieving a cer-
tain level of cultural identity, transferring objects into the
languages of different contexts. Emphasizing how these
forms of transgression demand a subtle process of adapta-
tion, this compilation illustrates how the effort of integra- 23
tion assumes a translation in inner cultural
self-understanding, an adaptation of knowledge, and the
framing of objects in their new traditional context.

Lieselotte E. Saurma-Jeltsch is a professor of medieval art

history at the University of Heidelberg. Anja Eisenbeiß is a
researcher on the topics of Asia and Europe at the University
of Heidelberg.

People in Their Worlds
The New Rautenstrauch-Joest
Museum - Cultures of the World
Edited by Jutta Engelhard and Klaus Schneider

Unveiling a fascinating exhibit at one of Europe’s leading

ethnological museums in the last century, this survey ex-
plores a conceptual presentation on new premises at the
Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne. Multifarious in-
sights into the lives of people worldwide are conveyed, re-
vealing various facets of cultural contact, how distinct
generations and sexes live together, and how individuals
use clothes and ornament to position themselves in society.
Rituals involving masks are illustrated, while the objects on
display also cast light on different religious world views and
interpretations of God as well as how death is dealt with
and the roles played by ancestors. High-caliber objects from
the extensive collection are scrutinized and displayed in
their original context, making the exhibition a splendid
plea for granting all cultures parity of esteem.

Ukrainian Artists
in Paris
1900–1939
Vita Susak

This is the first detailed look at the contribution of

artists from the Ukraine to the phenomenon known as
the School of Paris. At the same time that Picasso,
Modigliani, and Chagall were working in Paris, many
artists from Ukraine were also living and creating art
there, among them Alexander Archipenko, Mykhailo
Boichuk, Sonia Delaunay, Sophia Lewitska, Vladimir
Baranoff-Rossiné, and Hannah Orloff. In the early 1920s,
they were joined by Oleksa Hryshchenko (Alexis
Gritchenko), Mykhailo Andriienko, Vasyl Khmeliuk, and
many others—some achieved fame, others are long since
forgotten. Ukrainian events that took place in the French
capital are discussed against the general background of
the School of Paris. A detailed appendix is included, fea-
turing a dictionary of more than 250 Ukrainian artists in
Paris as well as a chronology of Ukrainian events in the
French capital, both covering the years 1900 to 1939.

This artistic monograph is the first of its kind to present the

panorama of the most typical examples of Hutsul embroi-
dery, specifically those embodied in the collection of the
Ukrainian Kobrynsky National Museum of Folk Art. Present-
ing a selection of beautiful, unique creations, this is a so-
phisticated work of stunning composition; ornamental
motifs; and clear, artistic, and aesthetic characteristics.
These motifs are ancient symbols that have survived to the
present day in the most varied of interpretations.

Olena P. Nykorak is the senior academic at the Institute of

Folk Studies at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Lviv.

Contemporary
Romanian and
Hungarian Arts
The Gábor Hunya Collection
Gábor Ébli, Adrian Guta, Emese Kürti,
and Mara Ratiu

Gábor Hunya's collection uniquely and consciously

represents the political and artistic environment of
the un definable era of transition around 1989. The
collection itself is becoming more refined and has
more works that can add further shades to the
eventful period in question. The youngest genera-
tion of Hungarian and Romanian artists, however,
now think in more general terns than before, de-
pending much less on local experiences. It will be
exciting to see what Gábor Hunya's ever-renewing
and organic construction will incorporate from the 27
new phenomena of Eastern Europe.

Gábor Ébli is a professor at the Institute for Theoretical Studies at the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design. He is a
former fellow at the Institute for Art History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and his publications focus on museum
studies and art collecting. Adrian Guta is an art historian, an art critic, a curator, and the head of the art history and theory
chair at the Bucharest National University of Arts. Emese Kürti is an art historian and art critic. Her work has been featured
in Artmagazin, Balkon, Magyar Narancs, Mozgó Világ, and Revizor. She works at the Museum Ludwig of Contemporary Art.
Mara Ratiu is a junior lecturer in aesthetics and philosophy of culture at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca.

Magdalena Jetelová
Landscape of Transformation
Edited by Ulrike Lorenz

With the imposing large-scale installation “Landscape

of Transformation” the artist Magdalena Jetelová, who
was born in the Czech town of Semily in 1946, brings
the explosive topic of human rights into the museum.
With the help of numerous illustrations, this cata-
logue documents how Jetelová, in a project specially
designed for the Kunsthalle Mannheim, creates an
enormous “experience space” that confronts visitors
with the relationship between law, injustice, and
morality. Now professor of sculpture at the Akademie
der Bildenden Künste in Munich, she works on vari-
ous levels: alongside optical mises-en-scène with
mirrors and black light, the topic of human rights is
also addressed through the media of writing and
speech. Jetelová, who first attracted attention with
out-of-kilter monumental chairs, now creates un-
usual spatial and perceptual transformations which
she initiates with electronic media and through cate-
gorical interventions in the architectural environment. 31

Wolfgang Mattheuer
The Prints
The Hartmut Koch Donation
Edited by Kerstin Drechsel and Ingrid Mössinger

The painter, sculptor, and printmaker Wolfgang

Mattheuer is revealed as one of the leading repre-
sentatives of the “Leipzig School” in this recollec-
tion of his work. Documenting how Mattheuer took
part in all exceptional art exhibitions in the German
Democratic Republic, the study covers his contribu-
tion to the famed documenta 6 exhibit in Kassel
and how it attracted attention in the West. Detail-
ing the individual works that found their way into
West German museums, this record also highlights
the largest stock of Mattheuer’s graphic works in
Chemnitz, chronicling how the private collection of
Hartmut Koch was acquired by the city’s Kunst-
sammlungen and how the artist’s complete graphic
œuvre became the property of the institution.
Reconstructing the accomplishments of a master-
mind who produced nearly 900 sheets with more
32 than 400 inspirational motifs, this catalog presents
his collection through large-scale illustrations and
scholarly essays. Mattheuer’s pictorial world, always
figural but yet often mysterious, unfolds through
etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, and lino-cuts
created over a period of six decades.

Kerstin Drechsel is the manager of the graphics

department at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.
Ingrid Mössinger is the director of the Kunstsamm-
lungen Chemnitz.

Young-Jae Lee
Forms from the Earth
Edited by Andrea Firmenich

Capturing an artist who has received a number of prizes

as head of an internationally famous pottery workshop,
this work represents the talents of Young-Jae Lee. Lee’s
work as a potter is rooted in Far Eastern tradition while
reflecting modern Western influences. She developed
her characteristic language on the basis of the formal
principles of the Bauhaus, making her bowls and ves-
sels noteworthy for their perfection of execution and
their memorable, discreetly colored glazes and paint-
ing. Young-Jae Lee’s works develop their meditative
effect both as individual items and also together,
interacting with other members of a group. In the
Sinclair-Haus, additionally, the artist incorporates
works from the ALTANA art collection on the theme of
nature into her large-scale mises-en-scène. This
catalog uses large-format illustrations to show the
resulting interactions—some harmonious, some con-
trastive and full of tension.

Dance Techniques
2010 – Tanzplan
Germany
Edited by Ingo Diehl

In 2008, Tanzplan’s Educational Program initiated a

research project on important techniques in modern,
postmodern, and contemporary dance in which
renowned dance institutions in Germany and Europe
were invited to take part. In seven project units,
dance artists, experts, and students researched the
working methods of notable educators. The project’s
goal was to provide a comparative insight into the
various transmission models of dance technique and
to make practical and theoretical knowledge applica-
ble. Drawing from the results of this research, this
workbook provides the ideal reference for dancers,
dance professionals, teachers, scholars, and choreog-
raphers. In addition to providing a closer look at the
respective historical context, concept, ideology, and
intended aesthetic, this study also describes physical
requirements, movement characteristics, the concep- 39
tual basis for training, and the methodology of teach-
ing. The book is completed by accompanying essays
dealing with the term “dance technique” and its
manifestations.

Ingo Diehl and Friederike Lampert are the editors in

charge of Tanzplan Deutschland. They are both
dancers, dance teachers, and dance researchers.

Studies in Afro-Asiatic
Comparative
Phonology: Consonants
Gábor Takács

Going beyond standard consonantal reconstruction, this

examination unifies various studies drawn from a decade’s
worth of etymological research. The study incorporates the
extensive lexical materials of the overlooked cognate African
branches, concentrating on the elaboration of regular conso-
nantal correspondence among Semitic, Egyptian, Berber,
South Cushitic, and West Chadic peoples. Featuring a com-
parative-historical analysis of the South Cushitic and West
Chadic sibilants, pharyngeals, and laryngeals, this consider-
ation is complemented by chapters on new etymological
evidence for the affricate origin of certain Proto-Semitic
sibilants, a critical appraisal of Otto Rössler’s theory on
Egypto-Semitic comparative phonology, and the background
of compensatory vowel lengthening in Proto-East Cushitic.

Gábor Takács is a research fellow at the Hungarian Academy

of Sciences in Budapest. She is the author of Comparative

Dictionary of Egyptian.
