Alright,
so
you
have
a
brand
spanking
new
beast
of
a
phone
you
want
to
make
the

most
of
it.
This
guide
will
help
you
do
just
that…
the
easy
way.
I
wrote
this
to
be

as
noob
friendly
and
to
the
point
as
possible.
The
main
purpose
is
to
boost

functionality
while
preserving
as
much
eye
candy
as
possible.
All
suggestions
are

welcome
and
the
guide
will
be
updated
as
new
methods,
apps,
and
information

become
available.

It
is
absolutely
necessary
to
follow
the
steps
in

“Preparation”
and
“Root

phone”
before
attempting

any
other
part
of
this
guide!

This
is
a
QR
code.
You
will
see
it
throughout
the
guide.
It
allows

quicker
access
to
the
market
apps
we
list.
You
may
choose
to
use

it
or
not,
but
it
requires
an
app
such
as
BARCODE
SCANNER
to

work.
You
simply
open
the
app
and
point
your
camera
at
it
and

voila.

Prep
Your
Phone:

 Alright,
first
things
first,
go
to
your
app
drawer
and
navigate
to
the
development
menu
through

the
following
path:
Settings
‐>
Applications
‐>
Development.
Check
the
box
next
to
USB
debugging
and

click
your
home
button.
Also,
for
the
sake
of
simplicity,
if
you
have
a
microsd
card
remove
it
for
the

duration
of
this
guide.

Prep
Your
Computer:

Windows:

Drivers
allow
your
computer
to
communicate
with
your
phone.
The
crap
drivers
that
windows

automatically
downloads
just
wont
do
the
trick.
Samsung
Kies
is
the
best
way
to
get
drivers
if
you
don’t

really
know
what
you
are
doing
or
having
trouble
connecting
to
your
PC.
After
installing
and
updating
it,

it
will
automatically
install
the
proper
drivers
for
your
version
of
windows
and
CPU.

Samsung
Kies:

1. Go
to:
http://img.samsungapps.com/support/Kies_1.5.1.10071_32.exe
it’s
a
large

download
so
take
a
break
or
read
ahead.

2. Once
it’s
done,
start
the
install
and
follow
through
as
you
would
with
any
other

program.

3. When
the
install
finishes,
start
up
the
program
and
select
Kies
in
the
top
left
corner.

Scroll
down
and
select
update.
A
new
window
will
pop
up
and
sear
ch
for
updates.
If
it

finds
any,
install
them
now.

4. Plug
your
phone
into
your
computer;
give
it
a
good
minute
to
shake
hands.
If
Kies
starts

downloading
additional
drivers,
let
it.
Whenever
it’s
done
installing
drivers
close
Kies

and
restart
the
computer.

5. In
your
system
tray
(the
bottom
right
hand
corner
of
your
task
bar)
right
click
the
Kies

tray
icon,

deselect
both
autostart
options,
and
select
exit.
We
won’t
be
dealing
with

Kies
anymore.
You
can
mess
around
with
it
later
when
you’re
bored.

If
you’re
having
trouble
getting
Kies
up
and
running,
here’s
a
link
that
goes
into
a
bit
more
detail:

Droid

Now
let’s
install
the
main
app
that
helps
us
manipulate
our
new
phone.
Follow
the
yellow
brick
road
to

http://de.codeplex.com/releases/view/48865
and
download
the
latest
version
of
droid
explorer.
Go

ahead
and
download
the
setup
not
the
standalone.
Note:
Don’t
screw
this
up
and
download
the
wrong

file.
If
you
have
a
64
bit
operating
system,
make
sure
you
download
the
one
with
x64
in
the
file
name,

32
bit
users
download
the
x86
version.
Once
you’ve
got
this
bad
boy
downloaded,
install
it
as
you
would

any
other
program.

Congrats,
you’re
ready
to
gain
complete
access
of
your
phone
now.

I’m
inclined
to
agree,
lets

swap

out
for
something
better:

1. Open
up
the

Or
you
can

scan
the

free!).

3. Once
it’s

4. Before
you
select

Select

Task
Killer:

Android
has
this
habit
of
never
closing
things
when
you’re
done
with
them
until
it’s
absolutely

necessary.
Some
users
report
that
using
a
task
killer
improves
performance
while
others
insist

android
handles
memory
management
just
fine.
Its
up
to
you
whether
you
install
it
or
not.
A

task
killer
is
an
app
that
kills
other
apps
that
aren’t
in
use
at
scheduled
intervals.
This
App
lets

you
select
which
apps
can
stay
alive
and
which
apps
it
can
kill.

1. Head
to
the
market
place
and
search
for
Advance
Task
Killer.

2. Select
the
app
labeled
Advance
Task
Killer
Free.

3. Install
it

4. Select
the
newly
installed
app
in
your
app
drawer.

5. Click
the
menu
button
on
your
phone
and
select
settings

6. Make
sure
auto
start
is
selected
and
show
notifications
disabled

7. Hold
down
on
a
home
screen
and
select
WIDGETS

8. Find
the
Task
Killer
widget
and
place
it
on
your
home
screen.

9. Every
time
your
phone
is
running
slow
or
your
battery
is
low,
just

press
the
button.

some
of
the

to

what
you

1. Hit

do
a

2. Download

running
click

4. When
prompted
with
a
information
box,
select
yes
do
it.

5. When
its
done,

only
remove

6. Find
any

IF
YOU
DON’T

DO
NOT
DELETE

are

you
keep
them.

safe
to

are

the
following
live

Aurora,

Bluesea,
Dandelion,
Luminescence,
MagicSmoke,
Music

I
don’t
recommend

uninstalling
these
however
as
they
can
be
useful
from

Plus
the
wallpapers
look
bad

ass.

Battery
Optimization:

If
you’re
like
me
and
expect
to
at
least
get
a
full
days
charge
out
of
this
phone
with
some
pretty

heavy
use,
we’re
going
to
have
to
change
some
settings.
Here’s
what
I
did
to
improve
battery

power:

1. Change
your
background
to
something
with
a
lot
of
black.
It’s
a
well
known
fact
that
super‐
amoleds
use
no
battery
power
when
displaying
black
pixels.
This
is
because
it
does
not

require
a
blacklight.

2. Decide
between
moving
and
still
wallpapers.
A
still
background
will
preserve
battery
and

increase
performance,
a
live
background
provides
a
+5
cool
factor.
It’s
your
call.

3. Remember
that
task
killer
I
had
you
install
to
improve
speed?
Well
it
also
saves
power
by

limiting
background
processes
that
force
your
CPU
to
do
work.
Again,
it’s
rather

controversial
but
you
should
test
it
out
yourself
and
see
if
it
makes
a
difference.

4. Whenever
you
go
to
school
or
work
or
at
home,
and
have
Wi‐Fi
connection,
go
ahead
and

turn
it
on.
If
your
Wi‐Fi
is
on
and
connected
to
your
network,
the
3g
gets
turned
off
and
you

save
power.
Wi‐Fi
uses
up
less
energy
than
3g.
However,
make
sure
you
turn
off
Wi‐Fi
when

not
connected
or
you’ll
have
Wi‐Fi
and
3g
on
simultaneously.

5. On
one
of
your
home
screens,
press
down
and
hold
on
an
empty
space
until
a
menu
pops

up.
Select
widgets,
and
then
select
power
control.
This
widget
is
very
handy
because
it
lets

you
control
WI‐FI,
Bluetooth,
GPS,
Sync,
and
Brightness
(in
that
order
from
left
to
right)
in

one
simple
menu.
To
preserve
battery
don’t
mess
with
the
brightness
setting.
Keep
Wi‐Fi
on

only
when
you
are
connected
to
a
network,
Bluetooth
and
GPS
off
unless
you
are
using
it,

and
lastly
keep
syncing
off.
The
reason
you
will
never
use
the
brightness
button
is
because
it

resets
some
custom
brightness
settings
we
will
set
up
later.

6. Go
to
settings
‐>
sound
and
display.
Uncheck
audible
selection
and
touch
tones,
they’re
just

annoying.
Scroll
down
and
select
brightness.
On
the
new
screen
make
sure
“auto
adjust

brightness”
is
checked.
Technically
you
could
squeeze
more
battery
out
by
manually

adjusting
the
screen
all
the
time,
but
that’s
a
hassle.
Click
ok
and
you’ll
end
up
on
the
screen

you
were
just
on.
Enable
the
second
to
last
option,
“Power
Saving
Mode”
if
it
isn’t
already.

7. Now,
navigate
to
settings
‐>
Accounts
and
Sync.
Uncheck
background
data
and
Auto
Sync.

Unless
you
rely
heavily
on
emails
and
need
instant
notifications,
it
is
a
good
idea
to
leave

auto
sync
off
and
manually
sync
when
you
want
to
check
your
email.
To
manually
sync,

select
your
email
account
in
the
same
menu
and
then
click
what
you
would
like
to
sync.

8. The
last
important
thing
to
do
is
go
to
settings
‐>
Location
and
Security.
Uncheck
Use
GPS

satellites
and
make
sure
“Use
wireless
networks”
is
checked.
Whenever
you
plan
on
using

navigation
just
turn
GPS
back
on
in
that
handy
power
widget
from
step
4.
When
you
are

done
with
GPS,
turn
it
back
off.

GPS
Optimization

User
GPS
experience
has
generally
been
hit
or
miss.
Many
users
don’t
have
any
issues
while
some
do,
it

has
been
confirmed
that
it’s
a
software
issue
and
is
affected
by
location
as
well.
Thankfully
a
user
here,

Shaneaus,
has
posted
a
great
guide
on
how
to
take
care
of
this
problem.
Head
on
over
to
his
post
to
get

the
scoop,
it’s
so
easy
a
caveman
could
do
it!

you
can

till

update
from

CPU
Optimization

Because
this
could
fit
both
under
Optimization
of
speed
and
battery,
I
decided
to
make
it
its
own

category.
Samsung’s
CPU
is
set
by
default
the
run
at
1gHz.
However
the
processor
is
capable
of
much

more
(or
less).
Because
of
this,
you
can
adjust
the
CPU
for
either
less
power
or
more
power.
It
is
not

recommended
to
go
higher
then
1gHz,
but
I
found
it
useful
to
max
it
at
800mHz
to
save
battery.

Sideloading
Made
Easy:

In
case
you
didn’t
know,
sideloading
is
the
process
of
installing
apps
from
other
sources
than
the
market

place.
Any
app
you
download
over
the
internet
on
your
computer
will
have
to
be
installed
onto
your

phone
and
ATT
doesn’t
make
it
easy
on
us.

PC:

1. Go
to
the
market
once
again
and
search
for
busy
box.
(Relax
I
know
you
already
installed
it
when

you
clicked
the
problems
button
in
titanium
backup.
The
latest
version
needs
to
be
installed

again
from
the
market,
so
just
do
it).

2. Open
the
Busy
Box
app
and
press
install.

3. If
you
correctly
followed
the
steps
in
the
rest
of
the
guide,
you
should
be
able
to
hook
up
the

phone
to
your
computer,
start
droid
explorer
and
have
it
connect
to
your
phone.

4. If
droid
explorer
is
connected
but
all
you
see
is
a
white
screen,
you
messed
something
up.
This

usually
means
the
latest
version
of
busybox
wasn’t
installed.
Try
step
2
again.

Just
run
that

I
had

of
this

It
should
be

pretty
self

Removing
ATT
Market
Restrictions:

Now,
if
you
didn’t
know,
ATT
did
another
nasty
thing.
They
censored
the
market
so
you
can
only

download
apps
that
they
deem
ok.
So
let’s
take
power
back
into
our
own
hands
(You
may
have
to
do

this
again
when
you
want
unrestricted
market
access
if
you
reboot
your
phone).
Here’s
what
you’ve

gotta
do:

1. Head
on
over
to
http://uploaded.to/file/en3pg4
and
wait
10
seconds

2. Once
the
time
is
up,
click
free
download

3. A
pop
up
will
come
up,
close
that
popup
and
your
download
should
be
ready.

4. Save
it
somewhere
simple
like
your
desktop.
Do
not
attempt
to
open
it
or
extract
it.

5. Sideload
that
app
like
a
pro.

6. Once
installed,
start
MarketEnabler
on
your
phone.

7. Select
the
settings
list
tab

8. Scroll
down
to
[us]
T‐Mobile
(T‐Mobile)

9. Press
and
hold
your
finger
over
[us]
T‐Mobile
(T‐Mobile)
until
a
menu
pops
up.

10. Select
fake
this
provider
now.

11. Thank
deception
for
bringing
this
up
and
gtg465x

bringing
this
fix
to
the
attention
of

captivate
users
.

you
have

ClockworkMod
Recovery:

*Same
rules
apply
as
with
every
other
part
of
this
guide!
Make
sure
you
followed
all
the
previous

steps
before
attempting
this
one!*

ClockworkMod
Recovery
provides
a
simple
and
failproof
way
to
recover
your
phone
and
should
be

installed
regardless
if
you’re
a
heavy
Modder
or
a
“I
just
use
this
as
a
phone”
user.

If
anything
goes

wrong
on
this
phone
software
wise,
99%
of
the
time
you
can
fix
it
with
this
method.

ClockworkMod
is
written
for
us
by
a
developer
that
goes
by
the
name
of
Koush
here
on
our
very
own

XDA
forums.
The
official
thread
is
here:
http://forum.xda‐developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163

and
I
always
recommend
giving
it
a
read
for
updates
or
help
if
this
guide
really
isn’t
simple
enough
for

you.

1. Go
to
the
Marketplace

2. Search
for
Rom
Manager,
make
sure
you
download
the
one
by

ClockworkMod.
Now
if
you
have
3.99
I
highly
recommend
buying
ROM

Manager
(Premium).
This
gent
put
a
ton
of
work
into
helping
us
Captivate

owners
out,
the
least
we
can
do
is
help
pay
his
internet
bills.

3. Make
sure
if
you’re
plugged
into
your
computer
that
your
sd
card
isn’t

mounted.
You
can
unmount
it
the
same
way
you
mounted
it.
(Go
to
your

notification
menu,
select
turn
off
usb
storage,
and
then
finally
click
turn
off.)

4. Once
Rom
Manager
is
done
installing
open
it
up
and
give
it
a
second
to
load.

5. If
you
get
an
error
message
stating,
“SD
Card
Not
Mounted”
then
where
the
hell
have
you

been!?
Did
you
just
not
read
step
number
3!?

6. Don’t
forget
that
you
were
instructed
to
remove
any
external
sd
cards
you
have
put
in
your

phone
earlier
in
the
guide.
Just
do
it
to
keep
it
simple.

7. Alright
so
you
have
rom
manager
loaded
and
you
didn’t
get
any
error
about
sd
card
not

mounted,
now
what?
If
you
see
any
ads
on
the
page,
give
them
a
click,
wait
like
2
seconds
to

load
and
click
your
return
button
on
the
bottom
of
your
phone.
(at
least
help
this
guy
by
clicking

ads
if
you
decided
to
be
cheap
and
not
support
him
by
paying
for
his
app).
(note
step
is
optional)

8. So
seriously,
back
to
the
guide.
In
the
menu
choose
the
first
option,
“Flash
ClockworkMod

Recovery”
and
wait
until
it
pops
up
a
message
stating
it
was
successful.

9. Next
thing
you
wanna
do
is
click
“Backup
Current
Rom”
and
then
ok.
Don’t
freak
out
your
phone

is
about
to
restart
and
backup
your
rom
.
*if
your
phone
doesn’t
start
backing
up
and
enters
a

blue
menu
instead,
use
the
volume
up
and
down
keys
to
scroll
to
reboot
system
now
and
press

your
power
key.
Once
your
phone
is
up
and
running
try
to
create
that
backup
one
more
time*

10. Just
wait
for
it
to
finish.

11. Pick
your
nose
and
check
out
engadget.com
until
it’s
done
backing
up.

12. Your
phone
will
restart
when
its
done.
Good
job
making
a
backup.

13. Lastly
select
reboot
into
recovery
mode
just
to
double
check
its
working.

14. When
your
phone
reboots,
if
you
see
a
green
menu
you
did
everything
right.
Select
reboot

phone
and
leave
it
at
that.

15. If
you
didn’t
see
the
green
menu
double
check
your
work
or
check
the
above
link
for
more

troubleshooting
tips.

If
you
ever
royally
f**k
your
phone
here’s
how
to
fix
it
with
said
backup:

1. Hold
the
volume
down,
volume
up
and
power
button
while
your
phone
is
on
until
it
shuts
off

(about
10
seconds).
Keep
holding
down
the
volume
up
and
down
button
even
after
its
off,

however
make
sure
you
let
go
of
your
power
button
or
your
phone
will
keep
restarting.

2. When
a
blue
menu
appears
you
can
let
go
of
your
volume
up
and
down
buttons.

3. Scroll
the
menu
with
the
volume
up
and
down
buttons
and
select
reinstall
packages.

4. Press
your
power
button
to
select
this
option

5. The
ClockworkMod
recovery
menu
should
show
up
(its
green).

6. Scroll
it
the
same
way
and
select
Apply
sdcard:
update.exe.

7. You
got
it
from
here


Changing
Your
Messaging
Ringtone:

Here’s
one
I
personally
had
a
problem
with.
You
may
be
fooled
by
the
setting
“Notification
Ringtone”
in

sound
and
display
settings.
Contrary
to
the
name
this
doesn’t
change
the
notification
ringtones,
well
the

ones
that
matter
anyway…To
change
your
Messaging
ringtone
do
this:

1. On
your
home
screen,
push
your
messaging
button.

2. Then
press
your
menu
button
and
select
settings

3. Scroll
down
to
the
bottom
where
“Select
Ringtone”
is
hidden
and
select
it.

4. Change
your
ringtone
to
your
heart’s
content!
(I
personally
prefer
morning
breeze
but
w/e)

Dumping
AT&T’s
Voicemail

Lets
face
it.
Carrier
voicemails
suck.
Really
badly.
Who
wants
to
call
a
number
and
have
to
listen
through

several
voicemails
just
to
get
to
the
one
you
want.
Well
good
thing
Google
has
Google
Voice.
You
may

know
it
as
the
service
that
gives
you
a
new
phone
number,
but
they
also
have
a
dedicated
voicemail

service.
To
learn
more
go
to
http://www.google.com/voice.
If
you
choose
to
sign
up,
you
can
get
the

Google
Voice
app
from
the
market
that
lets
you
get
notifications
when
you
get
a
new
voicemail,
and

actually
select
from
a
list
which
voicemail
you
want.

Ok
now
that
you
know
how
to
sideload,
the
first
thing
I
recommend
doing
is
using
Google
find
an

app
called
SyncMyPix.
Once
you
found
it
and
downloaded
the
apk,
sideload
it.
This
program
will
pull

pictures
for
your
contacts
automatically
from
facebook
if
they
are
your
friends.

I
also
recommend
looking
up
free
apk’s
that
devs
posted
online
and
not
in
the
market
place.
Explore

and
try
out
new
things.
Here’s
some
surefire
apps
that
you
can
either
find
in
the
marketplace
or

sideload:
(most
of
them
are
indeed
already
in
the
marketplace):

Apps:

QuickOffice

Xda

Engadget

Ofc,
look
something
up
on
google
b4
buying
it

to
make
sure
it’s
your
cup
of
tea
too.
The
paid
apps/games
also
usually
offer
a
trial
or
free
version

that
you
can
test
out
before
you
buy.
I
highly
recommend
taking
advantage
of
this.
