2. Manufacturing or Fixed bed type
3. Planer type
4. Special purpose type
a. Hand milling machine
b. Horizontal milling machine
c. Vertical milling machine
d. Universal milling machine
e. Omniversal milling machine
a. Simplex type
b. Duplex type
c. Triplex type
a. Rotary table milling
b. Drum milling
c. Profiling milling
d. Tracer controlled milling
 It is simplest and small in
size
 All operation are
performed by hand except
the rotation of arbor
 It is used for producing
small components like
hexagonal heads on bolts,
cutting slots on screw
heads ,cutting key ways
 It is horizontal milling, because
the position of cutter spindle is
horizontal
 In this machine vertical column
serves as a housing for
electricals, spindle bearings etc
 Knee projects from column and
it supports to saddle,table
 Table can give three motions
i. Longitudinal motion
ii. Transverse motion
iii. Vertical motion
 It derives its name from the
vertical position of cutter
spindle
 The overarm in this machine is
made integral with column and
carries a fixed head
 Table movements are
horizontal, transverse and
vertical
 We can perform drilling, facing
and boring
 Generally it is used for end
milling and face milling
 After lathe it is the most useful
machine tool and it is capable of
performing most machine
operations
 It is similar to the horizontal
milling machine
 The difference is table placed on
the swivel plate
 By that we can give one more
additional movement to the
saddle in horizontal plane
 It is used for helical gears and
spiral flutes and grooves
 It is modified form of plain
milling machine and is
provided with two spindles
 One is horizontal like plain
milling, another is carried by a
universal swivelling head
 This is fixed in vertical position
 It carries two more adjustments
in addition to all the possible
motions in universal milling
machine
 Special features that various
operations are carried out in
different planes and at different
angles in without disturbing
the work
 It differs from the column and knee type
milling that here table is mounted on a fixed
bed instead of saddle and knee
 It has only one spindle in horizontal position
 It gives longitudinal motion to spindle and
column will move in vertical direction
 This is used for mass production by using with
carbide cutters and requires huge power
 It has two spindles fixed
on both sides of table
 This machines are less
flexible the column and
knee type ,because
automatic feed is essential
 Table will withstand long
time for heavy loads
 It is used for large
production
 This machine have three spindles
 Simultaneously we can machine
three surfaces
 Actually it is planer
adopted for doing
milling
 In planer variable table
feeding movements but
here the rotating cutter
 Transverse and vertical
movements are
provided
 It is used for milling on
very big jobs
 This machine have
rotary feeding circular
table
 It consists of two
vertical spindles each
equipped with a
facing mill
 This machine is fast
on operation but is
limited to milling of
the flat surfaces
 This machine has a
vertical central drum
which rotates on a
horizontal axis
 For end facing ,these are
twice as productive as
rotary mills
 In operation drum
rotates slowly carry the
work against the
rotating cutters
 Automobile cylinder
heads and small shafts
are milled
 In appearance it is
vertical spindle
machine
 It has one to four
cutter spindles
 We can perform
operation in two
dimensions
 This machine is best for
producing very
complicated parts
 It has copying
capabilities through
tracer control
 On this machine we can
perform job in more
directions
 We can produce
complex shapes like
cams , dies, molds etc
