Taseer murder Mumtaz Qadri, the accused in the case of the murder of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer,
pleaded guilty in the court of Assistant Commissioner, City in Islamabad, following which he was
sent by Rawalpindi Anti Terrorism Court to Adiala Jail on a judicial remand until 24 January. In his
speech at the court Qadri confessed he had taken the decision to kill Taseer three days earlier after
attending a religious rally in Rawalpindi, during which a number of religious scholars criticised
Taseer's call for amending the law. (BBC Urdu) Qadri names Qari Haneef as one of clerics that
influenced him. (ARY)
Blasphemy law PM Gilani tells a press conference in Islamabad that his government has no intentions of changing
the Blasphemy Law and that he has had a telephone conversation on this subject with Maulana
Fazlur Rehman. Gilani also said he had assured Nawaz Sharif that the government was ready to
work on his national reform agenda. (BBC Urdu)
Aitzaz Ahsan says the Blasphemy Law 295C should not be scrapped and if Taseer had committed
any offence then the law would have been applicable. He refuted the reports that he has been
offered th job of Punjab governor. (ARY)

governor was responsible for his acts himself, extremism will be answered with extremism.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman addressing the rally says that amending the Blasphemy Laws is the
agenda of the West and the US and will never be allowed to happen, if the govt is ready to fight

Hasan says that Salman Taseer committed an offence of the Prophet by supporting Aasia Bibi.
Sahibzada Abul Khair says if the government attempts to amend the law then a Mumtaz Qadri
will be born in every household and a Long March will be taken out towards Islamabad. (Ausaf)
Protection of the Honour of the Prophethood Conference takes place in Lahore. Mufti Asif Jalali
speaking to the conference announces a march to Mumtaz Qadri's house on 19 January in order
to grant him the Ghazi Ilmuddin Shaheed Award; his family members will be protected. Sahibzada
Fazal Karim calls on the government to scrap the committee formed for the reform of the
Blasphemy Law, says death is the only punishment for those who offend the Prophet. (Ausaf)
Punjab governor Former Attorney General Lateef Khosa has been in principle accepted as the new governor of the
Punjab province. President Zardari had recommended him to meet with PM Gilani prior to the
decision as Khosa is known to have had misunderstandings with Gilani when he was his IT advisor.
The misunderstandings are now said to have been solved and Gilani has green-lighted Khosa's
nomination. (Jang)

allegedly one of the makers of the Taliban, Naseerullah Babar, passed away in Peshawar at the
age of 83. (BBC Urdu)
Politics Core committees of PPP and MQM to meet for negotiations today in Karachi. (ARY)
PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif addressing a press conference in Raiwaind denies ever using the word
'ultimatum' in relation to his discussions with the government; opposition is inviting the govt to
work together on one agenda as the situation in the country is moving towards the incurable;
overturning of democratically elected government has never brought positive results; govt has not
acted on Charter of Democracy. The new PML-N agenda to be discussed with the govt by our new
four-member committee includes: end to electricity and gas loadshedding, clear policy in this
respect; dismissal of corrupt govt officials; no more pardoning of debts on political basis; full
implementation of al judicial decisions including NRO; 30% decrease in govt spending; PIA, PEPCO,
railway, Pakistan Steel Mills restructuring; cut down number of federal ministers. (Geo)
Najam Sethi: It is obvious that Nawaz did issue an ultimatum to the federal govt. PM Gilani has
been recently weakened as the criticism shifted from Zardari to him. MQM and PML-N will continue
to play their game for political point home scoring. The recent ultimatums have proven successful.
Apart from the petrol prices and RGST issues I believe there have been some secret talks between
PPP and PML-N which will lead to a reshuffle in the cabinet in the nearest future. Nobody is willing
to take over the government in the current situation.
FATA infiltration Corps Commander Peshawar tells the media that he has presented the evidence of foreign
involvement in FATA; refutes reports of abduction of a tribal jirga in South Waziristan. (ARY)
Karachi jail Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza on the occasion of inauguration of new barracks in Karachi
Central Jail says that members of extremist organisations present in the jail pose a security threat;
smuggling of mobile phones under the disguise of food rations takes place. (ARY)
