SET 7

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

The world is getting smaller by the day. It is possible to have breakfast in Malaysia and
dinner in London on the same day. This is because today we have aircrafts that can travel faster
than sound. We also have spaceships that can go to the moon and planet Mars. We can boast of a
large variety of aircraft at our command. However, the secrets of flight are still the prerogative of
birds. Flying comes naturally to birds and long before the invention of the plane, birds were flying
around.
One great difference between birds and aeroplanes is in the way they move. Birds move by
flapping their wings. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to make the wings of aeroplanes flap like
that of birds. Birds do not have to rely on fuel. They get their power from their food while planes
have to be fueled before they can take to the sky. Without fuel, planes will come crashing to the
ground. Birds can land anywhere they like. Planes, however, can only land at special airports with
airstrips.
As far as speed is concerned, aircrafts can fly at speeds of hundreds of times faster than
birds. A Boeing 747 can cruise along at a speed of 912km per hour. Birds usually fly at a low speed.
They fly leisurely and gracefully at their own pace to wherever they want to go. Most birds have two
speeds of flight – a cruising speed and a greater speed used in emergencies.
All said and done, birds are still better than humans at flying.
