Helicopter
Helicopter
 A helicopter is a type of rotor craft. This
means that it rises into the air using one or
more engines that are driven by rotors.
 This means that the helicopter can take off

and land vertically, to hover, and to fly

forwards, backwards and laterally.
 This means a helicopter is very useful for

flying in busy airspaces.

Helicopter
 They are also
useful because
they need very
little space to
take off and
land. This
means they can
land on the
tops of
buildings or on
boats.

things
Planes
Airplanes
 Planes or airplanes
are fixed-wing
aircraft. This
means that their
wings stay still
while the engine
or sometimes a
propeller move
the aircraft
through the air.
Glider
 Gliders operate
without an
engine. They
are usually
launched into
the air by
another
motorised plane
and then glide
on air currents
to the ground.
Passenger Jet
 Passenger jets, are large planes that can carry
hundreds of people, their luggage and the
food they will need for many hours.
 Passenger jets travel all over the world.

 Have you ever been on a passenger jet? What

was it like?
Fighter Aircraft
 A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft
designed primarily for air-to-air combat with
other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which
is designed primarily to attack ground targets
by dropping bombs. Fighters are small, fast,
and manoeuvrable.

 Modern jet
fighters are
powered by
one or two
turbofan
engines, and
are equipped
with a radar

Hot air balloon
 The hot air balloon is the oldest successful
human-carrying flight technology

 On Nov 21, 1783, in Paris, France, the first

untethered manned flight was made by Jean-
François Pilâtre de Rozier and François
Laurent d'Arlandes in a hot air balloon
created on Dec 14, 1782 by the Montgolfier
brothers.
Hot air balloons
 Modern hot air balloons, with an onboard
heat source, were pioneered by Ed Yost,
beginning in the 1950s
 The first modern-day hot air balloon to be

built in the United Kingdom (UK) was the

Bristol Belle in 1967. Today, hot air balloons
are used primarily for recreation.
