SERIATION
The use of “numbered lists” may connote ordinal position. In this case, you may
use bullets. Example:
ABSTRACT

YEAR THREE PUPILS’ UNDERSTANDING OF FRACTIONS
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to identify Year Three pupils’ understanding of
fractions. …
BLOCK QUOTES
Block quotes are used for quotes of more than 40 words. Indent the block quote
five spaces; do not use quotation marks; double space the quote; do not include any
additional lines or spaces before or after the block quote; Note that in block quotes,
the period goes before the parentheses.
education has yet to explore the vast fields of human actions and operations.
the studies and as a result of this approach, they have explored new areas.
(pp. 12-123)

Regular quotes can be used when the quote is less than 40 words. Steffe (2010)
WRITING STYLE
Example 1: (Tone)
Correct: Hassan and Aminah did not address the issue of learning difficulties…
Example 2: (Redundancy)
5
Example 3: (Third person)
Use a personal pronoun rather than the third person when describing steps taken in
your study.
Use active rather than the passive voice, and select tense or mood carefully.
Note: The passive voice is acceptable when you want to focus on the object or
recipient of the action rather than on the actor.
Using of Comma
1. Use a comma between elements (including before and and or) in a series of
three or more items.
3. In references:

Using Colon
If the clause following the colon is a complete sentence, it begins with a capital.
They have agreed on the outcome: Informed participants perform better than do
uninformed participants.

Acknowledge Participant
1. Subjects and sample are customary for experimental and correlation designs.
Quotation Marks
John (2010) found that “the ‘placebo effect’ was not relevant” (p. 13).
2. To set off the title of an article or chapter in a periodical or book when the title
is mentioned in text.
Median scores were calculated for each five emotional categories (see Table 2
for raw scores for each of the two age groups).
Younger adults (14 women, 10 men, Mage = 19.5 years, age range: 18-22
years) were recruited with flyers posted on the University of Malaya campus.
Older adults (15 women, nine men, Mage = 76.1 years, age range: 68-84 years)
were recruited through Malaysian Cooperation on Aging (see Table 3, for
demographics and test scores).

Numbers
1. Use numerals to express numbers 10 and above. Use words to express numbers
below 10 (several exceptions):
multiplied by 3
4 times as many
Grade 8 (but the eighth grade)
Table 7
Row 8
2. Numbers expressed in words:
Any number that begins a sentence, title, text heading (Whenever possible,
avoid beginning with a numeral):
Twelve students improved, and 13 students did not improve.
Forty-nine percent of the sample showed an increase; 4% showed no
change.
Common fractions: one fifth of the class; two-thirds majority
Universally accepted usage: Five Pillars of Islam
3. Equation: Place simple and short equation in the line text. Example
a = [(1 + b)/x]1/2 . Note that equation in the line of text should not project
above or below the line. For difficult equation, write it in this form:
−b ± √ b2−4 ac
x=
2a
To present fractions in the line of text, use a slanted line (/) and appropriate
parentheses, brackets, and braces. Note: Use ( ) first, then [( )], and finally {[( )]}.
Use parentheses and brackets to avoid ambiguity:
Does a/b + c mean (a/b) or a/(b + c)?

Gambaran Mental

Jika segi empat selari
