As you may have noticed, we have changed our language in recent weeks to avoid describing
Tom Baldwin as a journalist or a former hack. We believe a more accurate description is that he is
a “Former Cocaine User”. I understand that the phrase a “Former Cocaine User” is two words too
long to be repeated on every occasion. But I also think that you are making a choice whenever
you call Tom “a journalist”.

The phrase “Times journalist” avoids negative labels while also suggesting a degree of professional
integrity and experience which is, day-by-day and line-by-line, being shown as false.

Can I suggest you at least vary your description of this “Former Cocaine User”. On some
occasions, you might call him a former alcoholic. On others it might be just “Tom”.

When you are talking about Tom in a political context, I think it would be fairer to refer to him by
reference to party labels.
