Biology Experiment – Population sample

Introduction:

While on our trip in Nassau, The Codrington and St. Andrews school’s students participated in an

experiment at Cabbage beach. The experiment was based on three different types of nertidae

(checkered print, bleeding tooth and four tooth nertidae.) The experiment was used to determine

between three of the different types of nertidae and the size of their teeth.

Research question:

1. Which species of nertidae has the larger teeth out of the three?

Hypothesis:

If a square shaped frame is placed over a community of Nertidae on a beach, then you will be able to

determine which nertidae has the larger tooth size of the three.

Materials:

 A wired coat hanger

 A clipboard

 Six (6) blank pieces of paper

 Nertidae

 Pencil

 Ruler

 A bag of numbers from one to thirty

 Measuring tap

Procedure

1. Take the wired coat hanger and then shape the wires into a square shaped frame.

2. Then measure the beach to thirty meters (30m), and mark from the beginning of the beach

to the thirty meter mark.

3. After, place bits of papers with numbers from one to thirty in a plastic bag

4. Pull a number from the plastic bag of numbers and walk to the meter point of the chosen

number.

5. Look for a community of Nertidae, and place the wired squared frame over the community.

6. Pick up each nertidae and turn over to see what type of nertidae is it.

7. After, measure the length and width of the tooth of each nertidae and count of many

checkered, bleeding and four tooth nertidae there is.

REMEMEBER:

You must not forget to be very careful with dealing with the nertidae to prevent killing them.

PLEASE PUT THE NERTIDAE BACK IN THE COMMUNITY MEDIATELY AFTER ANALYSISING THEM.
