Cite all sources using the CSE method (or ISO 690 Numerical in Word). The first example has been done for you.

Complete the self-assessment rubric before submitting to Moodle. Avoid printing this if possible.

1. Annotate the diagram to show the carbon cycle and processes involved.

A Respiration[ CITATION B Photosynthesis/ diffusion C Fossil Fuel

D Decompostion E

2. Outline some of the methods used to measure or estimate atmospheric carbon dioxide.

3. The topic of increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere has been the source of intense
debate with regard to climate change in recent years. This graph shows the famous ‘Keeling
Curve’ from Mauna Loa laboratory in Hawaii. Find out more here:
http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/globalchange/keeling_curve/01.html

a. Describe the overall trend shown in the graph.

 The chart is showing an increase in Carbon dioxide in Mauna Loa, throughout the years.
b. Explain the annual fluctuations in CO2 levels.

Peaks: The Annual peaks are connected with the Winters

Troughs: The Annual troughs are connected with North- hemisphere summers

c. Suggest one human impact and one natural cause that could have led to the overall trend
shown in the graph:
Anthropogenic: Factors

Natural: The carbon dioxide comes into the atmosphere by the sun and little is released
back out into space. This causes the carbon in the atmosphere to remain in the atmosphere and
heat up the earth.

4. Identify three greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide.

 Water vapour
 Methane

 Nitrous Oxide

5. Explain the greenhouse effect with the aid of a diagram. Include short-wave and long-wave
radiation.

The Greenhouse effect is when some of the heat from the sun is trapped into the Earth’s atmosphere by
natural and Anthropogenic causes. The heat that is released back into the atmosphere is carbon dioxide,
water vapour, methane and nitrous oxide.

6. Explain how increased atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases lead to an enhanced greenhouse
effect.

The increased atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases lead to an enhanced greenhouse effect by the
raise of heat which can increase the heat of the atmosphere.

7. Outline some of the possible consequences of a global temperature rise on arctic ecosystems.
Ice coverage:

Climate changes: water levels rising and temperatures getting hotter on Earth

Niches:

Plant distributions:

Animal populations: The amount of animals living on Earth would be reduced because a lot of
their homes would be destroyed due to the raise of the heat in the atmosphere

8. Outline the precautionary principle.

 The Earth becoming too hot for human existence and survival
 Source dying
 Raise of water level
 Animal exitance

9. Describe how the precautionary principle can be applied to anthropogenic climate

destabilisation.

The anthropogenic climate is what humans do that affect the Earth, and how we can change to better
the world.

10. Give two other examples of the precautionary principle in effect in Biology or Medicine.

11. Evaluate the precautionary principle as a justification for taking strong action in response to the
threats posed by the enhanced greenhouse effect. What are some of the steps that we could
take? This video might help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_anaVcCXg

Global climate destabilization is…

True
