Communities and Ecosystem

By: Chad Prescod

Define species, habitat, population,
community, ecosystem and ecology
 Species – A group of organism which can interbreed and produce fertile

offspring.
 Habitat – A location in which an animal normally lives.

 Population – A group of organisms of the same species, that live in the same

area at the same time.

 Community – A population of different species that live in the same area and

interact with each other.

 Ecosystem – A community and it’s abiotic environment.

 The study of the relationship living organisms and between those organisms

and their environment.

Distinguish between Autograph and
Heterogragh
 Autograph – Producer – An organism that synthesis

its organic molecules from simple inorganic

molecules.
 Heterograph – consumer – obtains organic molecules

form other organisms.

Distinguish between consumers,
detritivores and saprotroph
 Consumers – An organism that ingests other organic

matter that is living or recently dead

 Detritivores – An organism that ingest non – living

matter.
 Saprotroph – An organism that lives on or non – living

organic matter, secreting digestive enzymes into and

absorbing the product digestion.
Describe what is meant by a food chain
 A food chain is the linear flow of who consumes who

and therefore the energy and matter flowing through

the links in the chain.

Grass Grasshopper
Snake Hawk
Describe what is a food web
 The food web is a diagram that shows how food chains

are linked together into more complex feeding

relationships
Define Tropic Levels
 The tropic levels of an organism is the feeding

relationship of that organism to other organisms in

food.
Construct a food web
 grass – Blue-facedhoenyeater – Frill- necked Lizard –
Dog
 Eucalypt – Kangroo – Emu – Hawk
 Wattle – Crickets – Echidna – Kookaburra
 Termites – Magpie
 Wombat
