FOREWORD

This self-learning kit is made to assists and to help learners

understand the many changes in our environment that is
continuously happening. This serves as a guide for them in
understanding the different factors that trigger these changes to
occur and realized that human activities are basically considered
to be the main causes of these changes.

The fun and exciting activities in this material ensure students

that they will have a life-long learning.

This material consists some preparatory activities that

motivate the learners to study on the new topic as well as activities
that would recall or review climate change from their previous
lessons. Likewise, there are discussions of the main topic which
would be of great help for the learners to achieve the
competencies.

Students will perform activities that check on how far they

have understood or absorbed the lesson.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
K: describe what climate change is and its corresponding
phenomena;
S: identify the causes of the occurrence of certain climatic
phenomena on global level; and
A: give possible solutions to minimize the effects of climate
change.

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

DISCUSSION
Climate change is one of the
most current issues worldwide. Many
studies proved that the increase of
temperature that we are
experiencing right now is caused by
human intervention and also by
other factors other than human
activity. Man-made or not, climate
2021. Wp.com. 2021 change is a change in the
environment.
Global warming brings
about a rising of the sea level
due to the melting of ice caps
and glaciers. These may be the
reasons why we experience
severe weather disturbances
such as typhoons and heavier
rainfalls. Some experience La 2021. Tosshub.com. 2021
Niña and El Niño.

El Nino happens when the

upwelling of colder water is
blocked by large quantities of
warm water. Like in the Philippines,
since Pacific Ocean is at the east
of it, El Niño phenomenon will
affect the country. When there is
increase of the temperature in the
eastern part of the Pacific Ocean,
then some areas in the Philippines
2021. Eaglenews.ph. 2021. will experience this climatic
phenomenon.
Some areas also will experience near to above average
rainfall and some may have drier than normal rainfall. This
NegOr_Q3_Science9_SLKWeek6_v2

phenomenon brings severe drought and may cause thunderstorms
or massive storms. Unlike El Niño, La Niña (also called cold pacific)
is the opposite of it. This is triggered by the cooling of the eastern
part of the Pacific Ocean. Trade winds from east to west are
strengthened causing the upwelling of colder water to intensify.
Moving air brings along too much water vapor and when it reaches
landmasses, precipitation is experienced and would increase the
rainfall of the area. La Nina’s effect is the opposite of El Niño’s. Not
just El Niño and La Niña but also, global warming causes extinction
of some flora and fauna.

Global warming is the result of what we know as greenhouse

effect that is intensified due to an increase in atmospheric carbon
dioxide. What really is greenhouse effect?

The Earth’s atmosphere is compared to a greenhouse. It is like

greenhouse in the nursery, wherein the sun’s heat can come in but
cannot go out. Greenhouse effect is the warming of the earth's
surface and lower atmosphere. A part of sun’s heat is absorbed by
the Earth; partly escape into space and some reflected rays are
trapped by greenhouse gases. These trapped radiations of the sun
warm the earth. Carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbon,
nitrous oxide, and water vapor are what we call greenhouse gases.
It traps the heat preventing it from escaping the atmosphere and
absorbs the heat from the sun keeping the earth suitable for living.
Due to some human activities the amount of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere increases. More greenhouse gases mean more
increase in the temperature of the atmosphere since these gases
absorb heat. Less gases, lower the atmospheric temperature.

The increase in CO2 emission creates an alarming effect to the

environment, but where do these greenhouse gases come from?

 Burning of fossil fuels and plastics has increase the amount of

carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

 Overpopulation means more emission of carbon monoxide from

motorized vehicles used. Vehicles continuously increase the
amount of CO in the atmosphere.
NegOr_Q3_Science9_SLKWeek6_v2
7
 Deforestation. Agriculture is also often the reason for cutting
down of trees. Trees capture greenhouse gases (GHGs) like
carbon dioxide, preventing them from accumulating in the
atmosphere and warming our planet. After cutting the tress
greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere. When the
cut trees get rotten on the ground or are burned, other emissions
are created. Methane and nitrous oxides are produced mainly
produced from agriculture. If more trees are cut and are not
replaced, GHGs are left in the atmosphere.

In effect, climate is changing and will always be changing. We

human can either be a climate hero or a climate culprit. Anyone
can be a contributor in changing our climate. It is up to us if we
want to make this world remain hospitable to us human beings.

SYNOPSIS
People are wondering why our
climate is changing. Years ago, we
experience rainy seasons around
end of May to September but unlike
these times, rainy seasons usually
starts July until the end of the year.
Dry seasons are unbearable, melting
of ice caps and glaciers increases
sea level. Our country has
encountered several drastic
typhoons and killed thousands of
lives. Through knowing about these
different climatic phenomena, we
are informed that certain processes
occur and are triggered by human
activities; therefore, it is our
responsibility as humans to restore
the kind of home God has given to
us.
