HOW THE ORGANS OF EACH ORGAN
SYSTEM WORK TOGETHER: CIRCULATORY,
RESPIRATORY AND DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Introduction

Humans are considered as the most complex living things because we are
composed of different organ systems. A person must understand how the human
body works. Each part of the body systems does a special job and they all coordinate
to make the body functions.
When your body is busy, like when you play games, which systems are
responsible for keeping you alert, active and aware of the environment?
Everyday, your body needs food in order to stay strong and healthy. These
foods need to be broken down into simpler substance that your body cells use. Your
body also needs oxygen. It combines with the digested food and it is called burning
of food. What brings oxygen and food nutrients to the body cells? Where does blood
pass through? What keeps the blood flowing throughout the body?

Learning Competency

Explain how the organs of each organ system work together:

Circulatory, Respiratory and Digestive Systems.

Objectives

At the end of this Guided Learning Activity Kit, you are expected to:

1. Identify the parts of the circulatory system.

2. Describe how the parts of the circulatory system work.
3. Explain how the organs of circulatory system work together.

Review

What system of the body circulates blood from the heart to the different parts of the
body and back to the heart? Let me see if you can still remember what you have learned in
the previous Grade level.

Directions: Identify the body system that do the following work/function. Choose your
answer from the box below.

Muscular System Circulatory System

Skeletal System Digestive

System

Respiratory System

________________1. Body system that brings blood to the different parts of the body.

________________2. Body system that gives shape to our body.

________________3. Body system that changes food into substance that can be used by the

body.

________________4. Body system that is responsible for making the body take in oxygen and

give off carbon dioxide.

Were you able to identify all the body systems asked in the activity? If you
got 4 correct answers, you have a very good memory. Good job! Now you are ready
to explore more about the different systems of the body.

Discussion
What is circulatory system?
Circulatory System is defined as the body system which consists of the
heart, the blood and the blood vessels, also known as the cardiovascular system.
Cardio refers to the heart and vascular refers to a channel or vessel through which
blood flows. In short, it is the transport system of the body.

Figure 1: Major Parts of the Human Circulatory System.

Circulatory system has the following functions: It carries food, oxygen and
water to all your body cells. It also picks up carbon dioxide and other wastes and
carries them to the body organs that get rid of them.
There are three main parts of the Circulatory System. The Heart, the Blood
Vessels and the Blood. The Heart pumps the blood that circulates throughout the
body. It is a muscle that contracts and relaxes about 70 -75 times a minute or 4500
times an hour. It is almost about the size of one’s clenched fist and shaped like a
pear. It is found between the lungs only a little left at the center of the chest. It does
not stop beating while you are alive. The muscles of the heart contract and relax
in harmony. The tempo is set as the blood moves throughout the body. The
alternating relaxations and contractions of the heart is called the cardiac cycle.
The human heart has four chambers.
The upper chambers are thin- walled chambers called atria(Singular-atrium)
and the lower chambers are thick – walled chambers called ventricles. The Right
Atrium is the part that receives blood coming from all parts of the body. Superior
Vena Cava is responsible to bring blood coming from the head and neck region to

3|P age
the right atrium, while the Inferior Vena Cava is the part that brings blood coming
from the lower portion of the body also to the right atrium. The Right Atrium receives
blood that is rich with carbon dioxide and passes it to the right ventricle, which
pumps it to the lungs. Blood returning from the lungs enters the Left Atrium which
passes it to the Left Ventricle which pumps blood rich in oxygen through the rest
of the body. The right and left ventricles are the pumping chambers of the heart. If
there is Contraction, the right atrium forces the blood to flow to the right ventricle,
as a result, the Right Ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs for oxygenation via
the blood vessels called Pulmonary Artery. The oxygenated blood enters the left
atrium via the Pulmonary Vein. Contraction of the left atrium forces the blood to
flow to the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps blood to all parts of the body
through the largest artery called Aorta. The openings between atria and ventricles
are guarded by valves. The valves prevent the back flow of the blood. The valve
between the right atrium and the right ventricle has three flaps called tricuspid.
While the left atrium and left ventricle has only two flaps called bicuspid valve also
known as “mitral valve” because with its two flaps, it looks like a “bishop miter.”

The blood vessels enable blood to reach the different parts of the body. There
are three types of blood vessels: Arteries, Veins and Capillaries. Arteries carry
blood away from the heart. They carry blood containing oxygen or oxygenated blood
from the heart to the different parts of the body while Veins carry blood containing
carbon dioxide from the cells back to the heart except the pulmonary veins which
carry oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart. The superior and the
inferior vena cava are the biggest veins which lead to the right side of the heart. And
the Capillaries are the tiniest blood vessels but longer than all the arteries and veins
joined. They are at the end of the arteries that carry digested food and oxygen but
at the same time waste materials like carbon dioxide. Thus, the actual exchange of
materials between the blood and tissue fluid occurs in the capillaries.

The Blood is another part of the circulatory system. It is called the “red river
of life” because it supplies the body cells with the materials they need for
nourishment and repair, and it eliminates wastes from the cells. The Blood is
pumped throughout the body by the heart. It carries digested food and oxygen to all
body cells and takes away waste materials from them. It makes up 7 to 9% of one’s
body weight. An adult male has about five to eight liters of blood in his body while
female has lower volume which is about four to five liters.

REMEMBER

The main parts of the Circulatory System are the heart,

the blood vessels and the blood. The Circulatory System is
responsible for the distribution of food nutrients and oxygen,
and also for the elimination of carbon dioxide and other waste
materials from the different parts of the body. The human
heart is composed of four chambers namely right atrium, left
atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle. The ventricles are
the pumping chambers of the heart. The blood vessels are
network of small tubes that carry blood throughout the body.
They are the arteries, veins and capillaries. The blood, known
as “the river of life” is the medium of circulation. It carries
water, oxygen, nutrients, salts, hormones and other
substances to various cells of the body that sustain life.
