Connecting the Dots: The Human Body

Directions: The human body is composed of many different parts that work
together. Can you guess which body system does the following in your body?

1. breaks down food into smaller pieces - teeth

2. allows the body to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide - cells

3. push blood throughout your entire body - heart

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1.1. Getting to Know Our Breathing System: Key Partsb7

nasal cavity
pharynx
larynx
trachea
lungs

bronchi alveoli

Diaphragm

Answers:
1.Nasal cavity
2.Pharynx
3.Larynx
4.Trachea
5.Lungs
6.Bronchi
7.Alveoli
8.Diaphragm
Questions
1. What is the main function of the respiratory system?
-It helps us to breath

2. How do the lungs work?

-Your lungs bring fresh oxygen into your body. They remove the carbon dioxide and other waste
gases that your body's doesn't need. It helps us to inhale and exhale.

3. What gases are exchanged in the respiratory system?

-Oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Activity 1.2. Getting to Know our Breathing System: Functions

Key Parts Functions
1. Nasal cavity warm, moisturize, and filter air entering the body before it reaches
the lungs
2. Pharynx common passageway for air, food and liquid.
3. Larynx production of sound.

4. Trachea serves as passageway of air into the lungs.

5. Lungs organ of gas exchange.
6. Bronchi 2 branching tube that connect the trachea to the lungs.
7. Alveoli are the air sacs that allows gas exchange in the lungs.

8. Diaphragm skeletal muscle of respiration.

Questions
1. What important role do alveoli play in our bodies?
-alveoli is important bacause it is in-charge in exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide
molecules to and from the bloodstream.

2. What is the important role of diaphragm in our body?

-separates the abdomen from the chest. It contracts and flattens when you inhale. This
creates a vacuum effect that pulls air into the lungs. When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes
and the air is pushed out of lungs.

3. Trace the pathway of air by naming the parts of the respiratory system to which it passes.
- the air we breath goes through the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, lungs, trachea, lungs,
bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli then lastly to diaphragm.
Activity 1.3. Working Lung Model

Questions:
1. What does each part of the lung model represent? In your answer sheet, draw it and
label the parts that correspond to the respiratory system.

2. What happens when you inhale (when you pull down on the bottom balloon)?

-it moved and expanded.

3. What happens when you exhale (when you push up on the bottom balloon)?

- it return to its original size and place.

4. What is the importance of the diaphragm in the breathing process?

- contracts and flattens and the chest cavity enlarges. This contraction creates a
vacuum, which pulls air into the lungs. Upon exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and returns to its
domelike shape, and air is forced out of the lungs.

Critical Thinking Questions

1. Cilia (sing. cilium) line the nasal cavity and other respiratory tubes. Describe the
function of cilia in the respiratory tract.
- serve as a contamination filter or some component of a system

2. After playing basketball, Reb takes several deep and rapid breaths. After a while, he felt
dizzy. Describe what has happened.
- He experience hyperventilation. That's when you inhale much deeper and take
much faster breaths than normal. This deep, quick breathing can change
what's in your blood. Normally, you breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon
dioxide.

LESSON 2: THE AMAZING CIRCUIT (CIRCULATORY SYSTEM)

LOOKING BACK
Directions: The respiratory system is composed of organs for breathing and respiration.
Can you guess which organ is being described?

1. the passage from the trachea to either left or right lung

- Bronchi
2. also known as the windpipe
- trachea
3. sac of the lungs in which the exchange of gases between the cells of the body and
the external environment takes place

-Alveoli

Activity 2.1 Getting to Know the Components of Circulatory System Objective:

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Three Main Parts

Parts Function

1.HEART Pumps the blood throughout the body.

2.BLOOD VESSEL Carries the blood throughout the body.

3.BLOOD Carries the minerals throughout the body.

Types of Blood Vessels

1.Arteries
2.Veins
3.Capillaries

Types of Circulation
1.Pulmonary Circulation
2.Coronary Circulation
3.Systemic Circulation

Questions

1. What are the main parts of the circulatory system?

- the main parts of the circulatory system are heart, blood vessel and blood.

2. What are the main functions of the circulatory system?

- it is the life support structure that nourishes your cell with nutrients from the food
you eat and oxygen from the air you breathe. It also function with other body
systems to deliver different materials in the body.

3. Differentiate the three types of blood circulation.

- they are different when it comes to their movement..The pulmonary circulation is in
charge for the movement of the blood from heart to thr lungs and back to the heart. And the
coronary circulation moves the blood through the tissue of the heart. While ethe systemic
circulation is incharge for the movement of the heart to the rest of the body, including the lungs.
Activity 2.2: The Heart

AORTA

LEFT ATRIUM
RIGHT ATRIUM
PULMONARY ARTERY

LEFT VENTRICLE

RIGHT VENTRICLE

Key Parts Role

1. RIGHT ATRIUM Receives unoxygenated blood.
2.RIGHT VENTRICLE Responsible for pumping oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs.
3.LEFT ATRIUM Receives blood from the pulmonary veins from both lungs and
drains into the left ventricle through the mitral valve.
4. LEFT VENTRICLE Pump oxygenated blood from the lungs out to the body
5. PULMONARY ARTERY Responsible for carrying the oxygenated blood to the heart from
the lungs and carrying the deoxygenated blood from the heart to
the lungs.
6. AORTA Carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body.

Questions

1.Explain how the heart works.

- The human heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system,
supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.

3. How does the heart compare to a mechanical pump?

- The function of the heart is to circulate blood through two pathways. The pulmonary circuit and
the systemic circuit while Mechanical Pump performs two functions. First, its mechanical action
creates a vacuum at the pump inlet, second, its mechanical action delivers this liquid to the
pump outlet

3.Trace the pathway of blood by naming in sequence the parts of the heart to which it passes.

Activity 2.3. The Respiratory System Working Together with the Circulatory
1. How do the heart and the lungs work together?
-The heart and lungs work together to make sure the body has the oxygen-rich
blood it needs to function properly

2. Why is the blood from the heart should be transported to the lungs?
- They need some way to get rid of carbon dioxide.

3. How does the respiratory system work together with the circulatory system?
-The respiratory system works directly with the circulatory system to provide
oxygen to the body. Oxygen taken in from the respiratory system moves into blood
vessels that then circulate oxygen-rich blood to tissues and cells.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Directions: Read and analyze each statement. Write your answers on your answer
sheet.

Critical Thinking Questions

1. How does the structure of capillaries compare to that of arteries and veins.
-Arteries and veins is to carry blood over relatively long distances from one organ to
another, whereas capillaries form branching networks to carry blood over relatively short
distances within organs.

2. What are valves in the heart for?

- To prevent the blood from flowing backwards. Valves controls the movement of blood into
the heart chamber out to the aorta and the pulmonary artery.
