WHAT ARE MODAL VERBS?


Modals - (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are special verbs which
behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give
additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety of
communicative functions.

Here are some characteristics of modal verbs:


a) They never change their form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"...
b) They are always followed by an infinitive without "to" (e.i. the bare infinitive.)
c) They are used to indicate modality allow speakers to express certainty, possibility, willingness,
obligation, necessity, ability

Arthur Miller who was born in New York City started writing plays after he graduated from the
University of Michigan in 1938. Among his famous works is Death of a Salesman who gave him a Pulitzer
Prize in 1949 and was made into a film in 1952.
Death of a Salesman is divided into two Acts and a Requiem.

Modals are important because they alter the meanings of sentences to show necessity,
ability, possibility, advice, permission and desire.
Modal verbs are a type of “helper” verb. They are used before ordinary verbs and are
used to express meanings.
