TRANSPORT OF MATERIALS

IN RESPIRATORY AND
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
QUARTER 1 | LESSON 1
Parts of the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Respiratory System
❑delivers oxygen and
remove carbon dioxide
from the cells of the
body.
Parts and Functions
1. Nasal cavity – enters, purifies and humidifies the air.
2. Oral cavity – another way to enter the air.
3. Pharynx – channel the air down the airways.
4. Larynx – letting air passes through speech production.
5. Trachea – main passageway of air to the lungs.
6. Bronchus – allows the air to enter the lung.
7. Bronchioles – let air reaches the alveoli.
Parts and Functions
8. Alveoli – carries the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange.
9. Lungs – where the air sacs (alveoli) can be found.
10. Diaphragm – helps pump the lung which facilitates the breathing
mechanism.
Breathing Mechanism
Main Parts of the Circulatory System
Circulatory System
❑delivers nutrients,
carbon dioxide, oxygen,
hormones, and wastes
through the cells of the
body.
Main Parts and Function
1. Heart – pumping muscular organ
2. Blood – transport oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones,
and wastes through blood circulation.
3. Blood vessels – serve as pathway for the blood to flow
throughout the body.
❑ Vein – carry blood toward the heart
❑ Artery – carry blood away from the heart
❑ Capillary – smallest blood vessel where exchange of materials happen
Structure of Blood Vessels
Bicuspid valve

Pulmonary valve

Tricuspid valve Aortic valve

Parts of the HUMAN HEART

Parts and Function
1. Superior vena cava – carry deoxygenated blood from the upper body
2. Inferior vena cava – carry deoxygenated blood from the lower body
3. Right atrium – receives deoxygenated blood from the body
4. Right ventricle – pumps deoxygenated blood to pulmonary arteries
5. Right and Left pulmonary artery – carries deoxygenated blood to the
right and left lung
6. Right and Left pulmonary vein – carries oxygenated blood away from
the right and left lung
Parts and Function (Cont’d)
7. Left atrium – receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
8. Right ventricle – pumps oxygenated blood away from the heart
9. Aorta – passageway of oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
10. Valves ( Tricuspid, Bicuspid, Pulmonary, Aortic) – act as one-way
door that prevents the backflow of the blood
Pathway of blood through the Heart
Explain how the
respiratory
system and
circulatory
system work
together to
transport
materials to the
different parts of
the body.
