4. P ( −2) = −2 x 2 − 4 x − 4

5. f ( x) = 2 x 2 − 3x − 9 g ( x ) = −x 2 − 5 x
Find ( g − f )( x )

6. ( 2 p 2 + 6 p )( 5 p 2 − 4)

7. Find (f o g)(x) for the functions defined by

f ( x ) = 4 x −3 and g ( x ) = x +1

8. The number of first-year enrollments in osteopathy schools during the period

from 1990 through 1996 can be approximated by the polynomial function defined
by f ( x) = 0.5 x 2 + 68 .9 x +1852 , where x = 0 corresponds to 1990, x = 1
corresponds to 1991, and so on. Based on this model, how many first year students
were there in 1992?

16. 2a 2 = 11a −12 .

17. 3 j ( j − 2) = 2(2 − j ) .

18. A portion of a wall is a right triangle with a height that is 3 feet more than its
base. If the area of the triangle is 27 square feet, find the base.

19. A ball is propelled upward from the ground level. After t seconds, its height in
feet is a function defined by f (t ) = −16 t 2 +112 t. After how many seconds will it
reach a height of 192 feet?

20. The height, in feet, of a baseball released by a pitcher t seconds after it is

released is given by Height = −16 t 2 + 4.788 t + 6 . For the pitch to be a strike, it
must be at least 2 feet high and no more than 5 feet high when it crosses the home
plate. If it takes 0.5 seconds for the ball to reach home plate, will the ball be high
enough for a strike?
