Step 1: List your likes and dislikes

Don’t change careers for the wrong reasons and

switch to the wrong positions.

Think, take some time and jot down all the things
you like and dislike about your job, both present and
future.

Identify the things you are passionate about and the

areas which you hate to work on. This will help you
in making a choice which leads your career in the
right direction. Identify your hidden competencies,
make use of them to reach to new heights.

Step 2: Research new careers

Thinking on the same old conventional set pattern is

not a very good idea.

Keep your options open and do the proper research
to allow yourself to at least acknowledge the new
positions, no matter how far-fetched they may seem.

Who knows, exploring beyond the set boundaries

might make you land in a job you always dreamt
about.

Step 3: Network

Networking is the magic mantra to succeed and

prosper in the business world.

By making new contacts, you're basically setting
up pit stops along your professional lifeline as
you take on the unsuspecting curves of
downsizing and pitfalls of management.

Make a habit of making new contacts and keeping

in constant touch with them.

Step 4: Upgrade your skills and experience

Get over the idea that only children should spend their
time in study. Be a student so long as you still have
something to learn, and this will mean all your life.

Try to learn new skills and upgrade the existing ones.
Prove that you're well-experienced, and now recently
well-schooled.

This will make you stand out in a crowd and increase

your saleability.

Step 5: Update your resume

You spend hours in planning what to wear for the

interview, in knowing the facts about the
organisation where you will be facing the

interview. But you cant spare 5 minutes to update
your resume.

Remember, your resume is the first document

which is going to make you a potential future
candidate.

Update your resume whenever you feel that there

are relevant points which can be added to it.

Step 6: Set up some interviews

No matter how much you're willing to take the

corporate leap, the most defining moment is when
you're actually called into an office for the official

decisive sit-down with the potential employer.

Just make sure he doesn't call you at your current

job because that could make for an earlier dismissal
than you anticipated.

If this new employer is looking to check your

references, be careful about letting him do so,
unless you're practically guaranteed the position
and don't care about the effect it may have at your
present job.

Step 7: Be ready to leave anytime

If the news of your looking out for a change is out,

be prepared. In reaction, your present boss might
sack you before you pack your bags yourself.

Keep some "cushion cash" to support you while
you're "between" jobs.

Try not to speak out about your plans of a switch

over till all the aspects are settled with the future
organisation and the same has been given to you
on paper. There is no room for believing in mere
words.
