Hacking the KF700 – long post!

Through a lot of trial and error (and reading translated French websites) I have
managed to learn quite a lot about hacking the KF700.

I've already described in a previous post in this thread about removing the 3 Mobile
icons from the idle screen, that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Warning

Hack your phone at your own risk. If you're careful and take your time you should be
fine, the biggest danger is deleting a file without having a backup. If disaster strikes I
could send you copies of my backup but I recommend you make your own.

Necessary Software

You'll need EFS Media Builder, I mentioned this in the previous thread. I got it from
here: http://www.pspmyspace.com/techstuffs/files/efs_media_builder.zip

This software allows you to access the hidden files on your KF700. You can make
backups and transfer files. Make backups and you can always undo any mistakes.

If you really want to get your hands dirty and edit your icons you'll need a flash
editor... I've used Flash Decompiler Trillix.

Hacks possible

- Idle screen – As mentioned already, the 2 "3 mobile" icons can be removed from the
idle screen. In addition, the widget tab (top right corner) can be edited and made
transparent to make it much less visible. These two hacks really clean up the idle
screen and make it look bigger.

- Menu – The menu wallpapers can be changed, the icons can be renamed, the icons
pictures can be replaced, the icons can be moved to different pages, you can deleted
them and add new ones, you can change the appearance of the buttons and the
selector tabs on the right hand side. For example, I have a page dedicated to my most
used internet links. I have also moved all my most frequently used menu icons to the
second tab (this is the first one that you see when you press the menu button on the
idle screen).

- Submenu – these can be edited too. You can move something from a sub menu
directly to the main menu and give it an icon, and you can also shove infrequently
used main menu icons into a subemenu.

- Jog Dial menu – You can edit icons and colours and buttons.

Important hidden files

\LGAPP\Media\swf\MenuStringIndex.xml

This one can be edited in notepad, and allows you to totally edit menus and submenus
(names, locations etc). The menu tabs can only display 3, 7, 6, and 6 icons
respectively, any more appear without a graphical icon, so you'll need to delete (or
move to a submenu) some infrequently used ones in order to add new ones with icons.
See further below in the tips section about unlocking a seventh icon in the third menu
tab.
\LGAPP\Media\swf\Virgo_H3G_menu.swf

You need a flash editor or .swf decompiler that allows image editing. This file contains
the icon, button, and tab images. You can really change the look of your handset by
editing this file.

\LGAPP\Media\swf\superboard.swf

Again, you'll need a flash editor or .swf decompiler that allows image editing. This file
allows editing of the widgets tab on the idle screen, and making that tab in the top
right less obvious.

\LGAPP\Media\swf\theme\theme_bg0.swf and theme_bg1.swf

Again, you'll need a flash editor or .swf decompiler that allows image editing. Originally
I thought these would be the most important files, but they only mainly relate to the
menu wallpapers, but can be used to modify the appearance of the main menu tab
buttons.

Download My Themes???

I have gone to great lengths to modify my KF700 using the methods outlined above. It
took me ages... and sometimes I wonder why I dedicated so much time to it... ;) but
anyway, I'm really happy with the finished product.

I'm happy to share but don't have a rapidshare account or anything like that and I
don't know how to make my edited files available to you easily... any suggestions?

It's possible to get some links to some nice themes from this translated French site:

...But I like mine better! Beauty is in the eye of the behold I suppose ;)

More tips

There are lots of things I've learnt, but don't have time to list them all. Please ask
questions if you want to save on some of the trial and error I went through.

One tip is that the Black theme is probably the best one to hack and allows the most
seamless finished product. This is because there a few graphical aspects to the
interface that you can't seem to hack and they limit what you can achieve with the Sky
theme.

Another tip is that the third icon in the first main menu tab has to be Messaging,
otherwise the Messaging button on the idle gets buggy. This does not apply for the
Contacts icon though.

It is possible to "unlock" an extra icon on the third menu tab. The 3 firmware seems to
hide the final icon on this menu tab, originally related to the simcard. You need to edit
MenuStringIndex.xml and add an extra link to this tab in the seventh position, but
leave the simcard link in there so it is effectively pushed into the eighth position. The
Firmware hides the final icon position in the tab (which is now posotion 8), so the
simcard link is missing but you've unlocked the seventh icon for whatever link you
added in the .xml file. Sorry, hard to explain that succinctly... :)

The music icon in the main menu cannot be moved to a submenu, seems to be the
only one.

Final interesting point

It seems the French firmware of the KF700 has shortcut buttons on the idle screen
(where our 2 "3 mobile" buttons are) that bring up hackable menus. Seems a bit like
menu overkill, but check out this video and look for the small "pulsing" arrows buttons
where our "3" icons are. The video also shows a hacked theme that shows some slight
modifications to the menu icons.
