Introduction

International regime:
• treaties or international organizations - tools used by
the international community to resolve global problems
through collective efforts
• more specialized arrangements that pertain to well-
defined activities, resources, or geographical areas and
often involve only some subset of the members of
international society
• They are not sub national actors or non-governmental
organizations.
• They are international actors, and sometimes, when
formally organized, many of them can be considered
intergovernmental organizations.
• Origin: "perpetual peace”-Philosopher

Types of international regime
• International Conventions such as the Basel
Convention, the Mediterranean Action Plan
• regimes like the Bretton Woods System of
monetary management.
• International Regimes might also include
International Organizations in a broader sense.
Formation
• coordinate behaviour among countries around
an issue
• coordination among countries, from security
issues (such as weapons non-proliferation or
collective defence), to trade, finance, and
investment, information and communication,
human rights, the environment, and
management of outer space etc.
In the absence of regime:

• for instance, telecommunications between


countries - governed by numerous bilateral
agreements - complex to administer
worldwide.
• A regime - ITU serves as a forum, a multilateral
treaty, and a governing body -standardize
telecommunications
