The Igloos have developed from playing local gigs around Tyneside, to recently

playing at Reading and Leeds festival on the BBC introducing stage, were they
got great reviews and has helped spread the name like hell fire. They have a UK
tour planned for early March where they will travel around the UK. Lead singer
Harvey said that he hasn’t ever felt so confident about Igloos music after playing
Reading and Leeds, since they starting to play together when they meet at High
School, East Langton High where they first played together in a school talent
show where they walked to victory, because they were getting such good vibes
from other students and teachers they decided to carry on. They began meeting
up every week at Jacks house where he had the facilities to play because he had
no neighbours so they were able to put in the blood sweat and tears. All was
going well they were playing gigs at small locations and getting decent numbers
that were coming to watch, but then about 5 years after the Tyneside band had
began they were going through a hard time. Bass player Brendan had admitted to
prior rehabilitation centre in London where he would receive advanced help
with his binge drinking problem, Harvey had visited the rehab to see what they
would be able to do in aid of helping him. He then spoke to stubborn Brendan
who would not attend the rehab after parents had been worried and the
Tyneside band had nearly split until the band sat him down and told him the
truth on what way he was heading, downhill quickly. Harvey said this moment
was such a relief when he agreed to attend the rehab even though they still had a
huge mountain to climb before they back playing together. But we did it and got
back on track, all members and producers etc were so happy when Bren had
pulled through such a hard time then we had are first album released.

What was it like playing Reading and Leeds?

Playing on the BBC introducing stage was the best thing that we have done
because before the festival not that many people knew about us. It was only
people from around the Tyneside area that had heard of us from word of mouth.
But when we walked on the stage there must have been around 500 members
that where there waiting for us to play. Before we walked out I was nervous,
worried how many people be there to watch us, but also I was ecstatic we were
about to play out first festival, even if people did not know who we were. The
time slot for are set was so good at Reading, The Maccabees set was 2.30-3.15
then after that there was an 40 minute wait until The Cribs. So the people were
leaving the main stage which would mean walking past the BBC introducing
stage so 5 minutes into are set we had a serge of people that were coming into
the Introducing stage. This was brilliant.

What made you think of the band name?

Throughout the 5 years or so that we have been together we have been through
many names, Brendan especially used to get all excited we would all be sat
watching television or even producing the music in the studio, and he’d say ‘I’ve
got it’ bless him he came out with some right trash some of them including stuff
like Ugandan flies there was many more but are mostly embarrassing. Brendan
‘better than some of the stuff that you came up with though haha’ but it’s such a
hard thing to think of, everyone is going to need to remember your band, what
sort of thing do they remember something different or just basics names. When
we first started playing little gigs while we were all still at east Langton High we
came to a descion of ‘Galactic’ I think this was another of Brendan’s ideas he said
that he thought of this name because of the reasoning behind it, they are out of
this world, although it was cheesy at first but the name grew on the band and we
ended up keeping this for a couple of years before we had another name crazy I
know but we felt that we had to get this right. So then we had changed to the
name that we still have now ‘Igloos’ we don’t really have reasoning behind it but
you know when it just clicks?

Your first album when released was loved by the locals but hated by others
why you think this was?
I don’t think that this is true, just don’t think people outside of where were came
from Newcastle, this is a great place if you’ve never been by the way. But ye I just
don’t think people had given the music the time to listen to there was just a lot of
media reviews that slatted it, that pissed us off majorly. People were just
listening to the reviews of the people who didn’t like us. Probably why Reading
and Leeds was such a big move for us because it gave people the chance to hear
are music live.

Where do you want to go next in your career?

At the moment we are about to go on are UK tour, we don’t have that many gigs
lined up because we haven’t got the time. We have finished the tour we are going
to start writing are new album that we hope to be out next year. In a few years
time though id love if we could if we had the money backing and we were big
enough to go on world tour, I think this would be a highlight if the dream came
true. Were just going to have to work are tits of.
