I looked at a range of album covers, of artists within the indie pop genre.

I did this, to look at the styles of fonts that

were used, to display the artist’s name. I felt that this would be a really beneficial way to see how these artist’s chose
fonts that would resemble their genre of music, and how I could adapt this to a font for my artists name and also for
the name of my music magazine.
I wanted to make it very clear, through a number of factors, the genre of music I was portraying, and that ‘indie pop’
was the genre of music I wanted my artist to be associated with. The style of font, was one of the factors in which I
could show this.
Through my research, I found that. Each of the artists printed their own signature look on the style of font used. The
bands, commonly used bold fonts that were simple but effective through the boldness, that caused it to stand out well.
The female artists, those who I studied mostly, chose very quirky fonts. ‘Kate Nash’, ‘Marina and the Diamonds’ and
‘Florence and the Machine’ are really great examples of this.
I feel this is an aspect I would like to portray across my own fonts. As I feel the ‘quirky’ look portrays the genre of my
chosen music well, and therefore meets the conventions of that genre of music.
Magazine Name Ideas
• Bright Lights6 I asked 22 people their opinions on these
• ideas for the name of my music magazine. I
Lights 0 asked them to decide on the basis of:
• Little Dreams 0
- what they liked the most
• Starry Eyed 0
- what appeals to them and would cause
• Play 0 them to purchase it
• Beautiful Mess 1 - what they think represents the genre of
• Be Somebody 1 Indie pop the most
• Somebody 1 - what stands out
• Roll With It 8 The two names that were the most popular
• Song Bird 1 were ‘Bright Lights and ‘Roll With It’.
• Famous 3 Although ‘Roll With It’ was the most
popular, I am choosing to go with ‘Bright
• On The Radio 1 Lights’ as it was quite popular itself only
less popular by two people out of the 22 I
asked and therefore I feel it will still capture
the want of my target audience.
I found this style of font, and chose it as the style to represent
some text upon my magazine. I chose this, as I feel it really
reflects the ‘quirky’ style, that I found was commonly used within
the names of solo female artists within the music genre I am trying
to portray upon my own solo female artist.

I thought about using this style of font as the one for the title/name of my
music magazine. Although I really liked the way it looked, I did not feel it
met the typical connotations of a music magazine and therefore was not
suitable.

I thought about it again, and I decided to try it against the artist’s name. I felt this
was much more suitable, as it provided a signature style to that artist and reflected
the typical styles and connotations of a font style used by female solo artists, like
my own; Alex Robbins.
Now, having developed my research further, due to the
research in to the previous font. I tried to find a font, that
matched the typical style of font that is commonly used
upon a music magazine, as I felt this was a great way to
show I could portray the typical conventions of a music
magazine upon my own.
I felt this matched the typical style of font, as the font is
bold. Causing it to stand out above other text, just like a
masthead ought too.
