PORTABLE HOT TUBS FOR SALE –

HOW TO GET THE MOST FOR YOUR

MONEY WHEN PURCHASING A HOT
TUB
Hot tubs operate on centrifugal or
hydraulic pumps that run on electric motors. The
first hydrotherapeutic hot tub pump model was
designed by the Jacuzzi brothers in the 1950’s and
was a hydraulic pump. Most models of centrifugal
pumps which are wide accepted method for
moving fluid through a network of piping or
tubing. The water pump pulls water from the tub
down a tube where will enter the pump inlet, the
water enters the pump and is pushed out at a
higher pressure.

The water is moved to an electrical

resistance heater, the same type found in most
homes to heat the water for bathing. As the water
passes through this small cylinder it is heated by a
thick piece of oddly shaped metal which is heated
according to the thermostat controls. After the
water is heated it is moved into a division of tubes
to take it to its designated jet. This basic design of
tubing and organization might vary from
manufacturer to manufacturer. For instance hot
tubs mix the water with air before it is shot back
into the tub, this offers a more robust massage
from the jets and the air mixture can usually be
controlled from top side. Some models use an air pump to push air into the water with it. However
these designs tend to waste energy since the pump requires electricity to operate and a lot of times the
air is colder than the water and cool it down. A more efficient way would be to use a Venturi air injector
which is a piece of piping that narrows increasing water pressure and creating a vacuum as the water
passes over an air inlet which usually takes air near from the water heater. Either a pressure filter (after
the pump) or a suction filter (before the pump) is used to help keep the water clean.
A hot tub on average will cost about $250 extra per year to maintain depending on the actual
size and usage. The majority of electricity used up with a hot tub is during 70% of the time that it is not
even in active use. There are lots of ways to help keep your portable hot tub running more efficiently
and remember although the initial cost might be more you will definitely save money in the long run.

 On modern hot tubs they applied computer controls that are used to automate all the
functions and components on a hot tub that allows you to conserve energy better and
by having better control of the functions of your hot tub.
 California has started to monitor energy usage so be on the lookout for hot tub models
that meet California Energy Commission standards. These hot tubs often have a hybrid
part that helps to conserve energy usage.
 Look for models that use different pumps for the separate speeds. Single pumps that
operate on two speeds are known not to be as efficient for power saving as they might
sound although the initial cost might be more you will definitely save money in the long
run.
 Make sure your spa cover is in good condition and doesn’t become waterlogged. If you
leave town, program your hot tub for a lower temperature since you won’t be using it.

Follow these steps and it will keep your hot tub running more efficient, saving you
approximately half of the energy that would have otherwise been wasted.
