CHARACTERISTICS OF ROY’S THEORY

1. ROY’S model does interrelate concepts in such a way as to present a new view
of the phenomena being studies. It identifies the key concepts relevant to nursing:
the person, environment, health and nursing.

2. The sequence of concepts the Roy model follows logically. In the presentation of

each of the key concepts there is the recurring idea of adaptation to maintain
integrity.

3. The concepts of Roy model are stated in relatively simple terms. However , the
concepts of the person as a adaptive system does presents a challenging use of
specific terms, including cognator and regulator mechanisms and adaptation level.
The 4 adaptive modes may be the first aspects of the model that the student or
nurse is able to assimilate.

4. Theories can be the bases for hypotheses that can be tested or for theory to be
expanded.

5. Roy’s model clearly identifies the connecting relationship between underlying

theories. Testable hypotheses are thus generated.

6. The most important aspects of a theory is its usefulness in practice. A major

strength of the model is that it guides nurses to use observation and individualized
assessment of each person. It considering all the adaptive modes – physiological,
self-concept, role function, and interdependence-the nurse is likely to have
comprehensive view of the person.

7. The Roy model requires the integration of further theorizing for explanatory and
predictive information in clinical situation. The concepts of adaptation as
developed by the model appears to have good linkage qualities
