DEFINING LANDSCAPE TERMINOLOG


COMPONENT LANDSCAPE
A discrete portion of the landscape which can be furt
subdivided into individual features.
The landscape unit may contribute to the significanc
National Register property, such as a farmstead in a
district.
In some cases, the landscape unit may be individuall
the National Register of Historic Places, such as a ros

CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
A geographic area (including both cultural and natura

A landscape that evolved through use by the people
activities or occupancy shaped it.
Through social or cultural attitudes of an individual, a
community, the landscape reflects the physical, biolo
cultural character of everyday lives.
Function plays a significant role in vernacular landsca
This can be a farm complex or a district of historic fa

ETHNOGRAPHIC LANDSCAPE
A landscape containing a variety of natural and cultu
that associated people define as heritage resources
