Committees in Congress - KEY

2. The responsibilities of Congressional Committees are to to research,


discuss, and revise every new bill.

3. The head of a Congressional Committee is called the chairperson.

4. Four types of Congressional Committees are:


a. standing
b. select
c. joint
d. conference

5. A standing committee is a permanent committee in a legislative body to


which bills in a specified-matter area are referred.

6. A select committee is a legislative committee created for a limited time


and for some specific purpose.

7. A joint committee is a legislative committee composed of members of


both houses.

8. A conference committee is a joint committee that meets to help House


& Senate members agree on the details of a proposed law.

9. Members of Congress are given top posts and the most desirable
committee appointments based on the seniority rule.
