Activity: Investigating the current Standing, Select
and Joint Committees in the House and Senate
• Go to today’s folder in eKadence
• Access the link to either the House and Senate Committee pages
• Spend 10 minutes silently investigating committees in either one or both chambers. You
can:
• Focus on just one committee
• Compare and contrast two committees (one in the House and one in the Senate)
• While researching take notes on the following information:
• On what did you direct your investigation? (A specific committee, comparing and contrasting House
and Senate committees?)
• What type of committee(s) did you investigate? (Standing, Select, Joint)
• What did you learn during your investigation?
• 5 substantive statements about the committee:
• Example:
• The U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis
• This committee was created in 2019 by Speaker Pelosi to acknowledge the threat of climate change.
• This is a select committee - no laws are debated - they just investigate and study ways to reduce pollution and then
make recommendations to the rest of the Congress on what they”think” Congress should do.
• In June 2020 the Democrats on the committee released an action plan to reduce air pollution by 2050 that would save
60,000 lives and save the economy $8 trillion. The entire action plan is available on the committees website.
• There are 9 Democrats and 7 Republicans on this committee.
