Video Exploration of Congressional Leadership

Introduction: In yesterday’s textbook reading assignment you learned about the


leadership structure in the House of Representatives and the Senate. You were asked to
create some type of graphic organizer in which you took notes on what you learned
about the leadership positions in the House and Senate.

Below is a graphic organizer that details the leadership structure in both chambers.

Directions: You will be watching a series of videos about the different leadership
positions in the House and Senate. Please follow the directions below to annotate the
above graphic (in Kami) with the information you learn from the videos.

1. Watch Video #1: What does the Speaker of the House do?
a. Annotate the graphic organizer with the information you learn about the role of
the Speaker of the House.
2. Watch Video #2: How Nancy Pelosi Became the Most Powerful Woman in U.S. Politics.
3. Watch Video #3: The 2021 60 Minutes Interview
a. During both videos take notes on the following questions:
i. What are the 3 things that stand out to you the most about Nancy Pelosi?
ii. What characteristics/traits do you think she has that would make her a
good leader for the Democrats/Speaker of the House?
b. Pause - Go to the padlet for your period and post your answers to the above two
questions!
4. Watch Video #4:What Does the House Majority Leader do?
a. Annotate the graphic organizer with the information you learn about the majority
leader in the House.
5. Watch Video #5: What’s a Whip?
a. Annotate the graphic organizer with the information you learn about the role of
Whips. (Whips have the same role in both chambers!)
6. Watch Video #6: Who is the President Pro Tempore of the Senate
a. Continue to annotate your graphic organizer - paying special attention to
information about positions you have not yet annotated - in particular the Vice
President and the Senate Majority Leader.
b. You will also get additional information about some of the other positions.

When finished - complete questions 9-13 from the reading assignment that was assigned
in Wednesday’s folder.
