Multiple Choice Tips
• Read the question carefully
– Do not rush, you may misinterpret the questions (if unsure ask Dr. Wong)
• Read all of the choices
– Do not stop reading once you think you’ve found the correct choice
– You may try covering the answers and answering the question in your head before you look at the answers
• If you struggle:
– Try making each multiple choice option a true or false question
– eliminate those that you know are wrong
• Notice all-or-nothing words or phrases
– Every, always, all
• Offer little room for exceptions or alternatives
– Some, many, or few
• Offer more room for exceptions or alternatives
• “All the Above”
– If you can confirm at least 2 without question, choose this
• Answer Questions in order
– If you spend time skipping around, you may forget to answer one accidentally
– If you are stuck, guess and put a mark beside the number and come back to it
• Never leave a questions unanswered
• Double Check!!
– Time consuming
– Gain points back from dumb mistakes
– If you are going to change an answer, you better double and triple check your reasoning!!
If you have test anxiety…
• Work through the test slowly, calmly,
and methodically
– Take a short break to breathe, stretch, and
relax
• Read the questions thoroughly
• Ear plugs
