Abstract:

The beauty of technology is its utility. The myriad applications it can be subjected to
only enhance the quality of lifestyle and make the planet a bit more comfortable to
live in. The last century has progressed technologically more than the whole
millennium. The dawn of the space age has led to the development of several dual
use technologies, which find extensive utilization both for military and civilian
purposes. Global Positioning System (GPS) is one such technology that relies
extensively on satellite communication.

GPS has become a mainstay of transportation systems worldwide, providing

navigation for aviation, ground, and maritime operations. From Disaster relief and
life-saving missions to everyday activities such as banking, mobile phone
operations, and even the control of power grids - GPS is everywhere! Both farmers
and army men perform their work more efficiently, safely, economically, and
accurately using the free and open GPS signals.

In fact, it is the military that has benefited the most due to its precision and
accuracy of tracing locations anywhere on the Earth. This paper explores the basics
of GPS and its growing importance in military action. It highlights the varied
purposes - from navigation and mapping to precise bomb/missile targeting which
require extreme care and precision. It seeks to understand the extent of GPS
involvement in armies worldwide (especially India) and the alternatives (GPS is
operated by the US Department of Defence) available. The ultimate aim is
highlighting how GPS is increasingly becoming the backbone of advanced weaponry
and military operations.
