This, I Believe

I believe in free time. Whether I find free time in between classes or after school, I

always use it to help myself concentrate and focus my thoughts. It allows me to think, enjoy, and

do whatever I want, without rules and without interruptions. I can figure out how long I can

work, how much I can memorize, and analyze myself in a completely different way.

Taking time away from academics and other school activities (which are normally very

stressful) can help to encourage many things. Free Time encourages communication and

interaction between peers, using your imagination and problem-solving skills, and is a general

stress reliever.

I remember when I was in elementary school and all that I looked forward to was recess

and going home. The reason why I looked forward to recess was because, quite simply, I was

free. I could play with other kids on swingsets and jungle gyms, and have a fun time. In the

process, I learnt simple rules such as sharing and taking turns and what social behavior is

acceptable. Unknown to me, the playground was a classroom for human nature. I grew to accept

that people behave differently in certain situations, and how to deal with varying circumstances

accordingly as well as how to respect other’s differences.

Free time also helped me to use my imagination. Transforming a Congo Line into a

journey across a wild river and a simple swing set into a circus show engaged my imagination.

My imagination allowed me think independently and outside of the box. The conversion of

simple playground activities into something entirely different stimulated my imagination,

providing a strong sense of independence.

In addition, recess in elementary school helped me to release stress. Taking time away

from school and chores let go of built-up tension and excess energy. Swinging, jumping,

climbing and running were good for me both physically and emotionally.

Free Time is an important part of keeping anyone well-rounded and healthy. It allows

kids a recess for the soul and a chance to reset themselves and really get back into the swing of

things. It helps kids dream, relax and learn to work with others.
